“Who are you? This is so impressive” – Phantom Blade Zero Director Reveals PlayStation Executives Were So Impressed by Its Early Trailer That They Invited S-Game to the 2023 Showcase

Phantom Blade Zero might now be one of the most anticipated action games from China, but its rise began with a surprisingly informal meeting. S-Game, a studio previously focused on smaller projects and mobile games, caught the attention of PlayStation executives after presenting an early version of its ambitious kung fu action RPG.

Speaking to PCGamesN during a visit to Beijing, game director Soulframe recalled how the encounter helped put the project on the international stage. The developers initially expected to show their work to a business representative, unaware that several major PlayStation figures were nearby.

The meeting took an unexpected turn when the representative invited other executives to watch the trailer. Among them were Christian Svensson and Shuhei Yoshida, whose reaction helped change the studio’s trajectory.

According to Soulframe, Svensson responded with an enthusiastic question:

“Holy shit! Who are you? This is so impressive.”

The reaction led to an invitation for S-Game to participate in the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, giving Phantom Blade Zero an opportunity to reach a much larger audience.

AN EARLY TRAILER PUT S-GAME ON PLAYSTATION’S RADAR

Soulframe described the original meeting as an opportunity that arrived at the right moment. He and his colleague entered the executive conference with a rough prototype that looked very different from the polished game audiences see today.

The developers had only about two months to prepare material for the showcase. Rather than attempting to build an entirely new demonstration, they focused on refining what they already had and assembling a three-minute trailer.

“We just compile everything and polish what we have on hand to do a three-minute trailer,”

Soulframe explained to PCGamesN.

The gamble paid off. The Phantom Blade Zero trailer became the second-most-viewed trailer from the showcase, trailing only Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. That visibility helped establish S-Game as a studio worth watching beyond its previous mobile development work.

PHANTOM BLADE ZERO HAS GROWN BEYOND ITS ORIGINAL SHOWCASE

The game’s journey since 2023 reflects how dramatically S-Game’s ambitions have expanded. What began as a relatively rough presentation has developed into a large-scale action RPG featuring cinematic martial arts, elaborate boss battles, and a distinctive visual identity inspired by Chinese kung fu and wuxia traditions.

In a separate interview with Inven Global, Soulframe explained that the studio faced considerable challenges transitioning to AAA development with Unreal Engine 5. He also emphasized that the team still embraces an independent mindset, even though Phantom Blade Zero has a substantial budget.

The game has since received prominent PlayStation promotional support, including its own State of Play presentation. This marks a considerable change from S-Game’s first showcase appearance, when the team had limited time and modest expectations for its trailer.

Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Its early meeting with PlayStation executives now stands as a pivotal moment in the game’s path from an ambitious prototype to a major international release.
