Prime Video’s upcoming God of War TV series is reportedly preparing another major casting change, with new actors expected to take over the roles of Atreus and Thrud in Season 2. The reported recasting decision comes as the adaptation moves toward a later point in the Norse storyline, requiring older performers to portray the characters.
According to reports, the production is searching for teenage actors between the ages of 14 and 17 to play the roles in the second season. Callum Vinson, known for his work in Chucky, is currently set to portray a younger Atreus in Season 1, while Island Austin (Insidious: Out of the Further) plays Thrud.
While recasting major characters can often raise concerns among fans, this change appears connected to the timeline progression of the original games rather than a behind-the-scenes issue.
God of War Season 2 Recast Matches Atreus’ Growth in the Games
The reported decision reflects the natural aging process seen between God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. In the games, several years pass between the two stories, and Atreus changes significantly as he grows from a child into a teenager discovering more about his identity, powers, and connection to Norse mythology.
A similar time jump would allow the television adaptation to portray Atreus’ development more accurately. Instead of keeping the same young actor and relying on makeup or digital effects, the production appears ready to follow the games’ approach by showing the character’s physical and emotional growth.
The recasting of Thrud also follows this logic, as the character’s role expands alongside the larger events of the Norse saga. A teenage performer would better fit the direction expected for the next chapter of the story.
The Atreus and Thrud recasting reports come during a complicated production period for the series. The show is also dealing with uncertainty surrounding its lead character, Kratos, after actor Ryan Hurst reportedly exited the project following a serious injury.
Reports suggest completed episodes featuring Hurst were scrapped and will be reshot with a new actor playing the legendary Spartan warrior. A replacement for Kratos has not yet been officially announced, making the search for the series’ central figure one of the biggest remaining challenges.
Despite these setbacks, the adaptation continues to have a strong supporting cast. Mandy Patinkin is set to play Odin, while Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will portray Thor. The cast also includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Sonya Walger as Freya, and Alastair Duncan returning as Mimir from the original games.
With the recasting of younger characters reportedly planned around the story’s timeline, the biggest question now remains whether Prime Video can find the right actor to bring Kratos to life. No official release date for the God of War TV series has been announced yet.
