HBO’s period political miniseries “White House Plumbers,” starring Woody Harrelson, Justin Theroux, and Lena Headey, tells the story of the Watergate scandal from the perspective and vantage points of the men who broke into the Democratic National Headquarters in Washington DC, got caught and then unleashed a political scandal that ended up with US President Richard Nixon resigning ahead of an impeachment trial.
Created by the same people who brought us great productions like Veep starring Julia Louis Dreyfuss and the award-winning drama Succession, this miniseries will bring to the small screen a well-known story from a different vantage point with some great scriptwriting, an amazing ensemble cast, and mass production value.
The debut episode of the season presented us the backdrop of the story, as the Republican National Committee and its Committee To Re-Elect The President wanted to get the advantage in the reelection campaign from the Democrats and decided to play dirty. To do so, they started doing some headhunting which led them to Howard Hunt, a man of many talents and hungry for money who would eventually lead the Watergate burglars into the DNCs offices.
White House Plumbers Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 begins with a flashback of when the Watergate burglars tried for the second time to get in the building, but one of the Cubans couldn’t jimmy the door. Then we flash further back when Howard Hunt gets called by the White House staff to participate in a shady operation. It’s the year the Pentagon Papers dropped in the press, and the presidency isn’t happy about it. So, they move their resources to plug those leaks, giving way to what later would become the plumbers.
Howard Hunt goes to the Executive Office Building and meets Gordon Liddy, and the two don’t get along. While Howard is from the CIA, Liddy is a former federal agent. And they have different ways to approach the situation. We then move to a briefing room where White House presidency aides and the number two man at the FBI hand over some intel on the guy who leaked the Pentagon Papers, and Gordon and Hunt are tasked to get a file from the doctor treating the journo that leaked the papers to the press.
Beverly Hills Burglary
Hunt and Liddy go to California to infiltrate the doctor’s office, but they have a hard time getting the info they want. So, Hunt recruits some old buddies from his CIA days, a bunch of shady Cubans that worked in the Bay of Pigs fiasco, to help him infiltrate the doctor’s office. The Cubans go to the office and tear the place apart, despite it being a stealth operation.
So much for stealthiness there. Then, they get no useful intel. As such, the operation is compromised, and the people at the White House decide to fire Hunt and Liddy…Only to rehire them in the Committee to Re-Elect The President and with the task of bugging, spying, and sabotaging the efforts of the Democratic National Committee.
