Paramount+’s latest series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, is the perfect addition to the already intriguing Star Trek collection. Moreover, this Alex Kurtzman show’s cast includes the same actors from Star Trek: Discovery.
The storyline of Strange New Worlds, which is considered the 11th addition to the Star Trek series, centers on Captain Pike, Spock, and Number One as they venture deep into space in search of unknown planets.
What makes Strange New Worlds so different is that the plot not just focuses on making exciting first contacts but also shows us how each character deals with their traumas while ensuring they complete each task successfully.
Captain Pike, plagued by a vision of his death, sets out on the Starship despite feeling immense fear and retiring from his job as a captain previously. The roles played by the cast & crew of Strange New Worlds are Anson Mount in the role of Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck plays Spock, Jess Buss stars in the role of Christine Chapel, and Christina Chong plays La’an Noonien-Singh.
Since its first premiere, Strange New Worlds has gathered tons of positive reviews, each praising this Star Trek spin-off for its plot, acting, and the atmosphere it creates that’s strongly reminiscent of the previous Star Trek projects.
Star Trek Strange New Worlds: Filming Locations
Filming for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds began in February of 2022 and lasted until June of the same year. The major filming spot for the absorbing adventure series is Mississauga, Ontario. Each episode of Strange New Worlds has a new tone, making it hard to believe all of it was shot in a single place.
Ontario, Canada:
Most of the scenes that we see in Strange New Worlds take place inside the starship, which is created at the CBS Stages Canada based in Mississauga. The main producer, Paramount+, supposedly provided a video wall to help add a more realistic effect in filming the space scenes.
This concept of using a video wall to simulate a virtual world goes back to the filming of The Mandalorian, which was filmed in California. Right before filming for Strange New Worlds began, Pixomondo, the award-winning visual effects company, came in with their gigantic LED, measuring almost 70 feet by 30 feet. Ontario’s a well-known filming location because films and TV shows like Suits, Black Mirror, The Boys, Wednesday, and American Psycho were shot right here.
Even though most of the scenes were filmed inside the set, few shots were taken in appropriate outdoor places like Ontario Place. Known for its exciting summer events and waterfront, the Ontario place has been featured in movies like Tommy Boy, Slumberland, The Golden Compass, and Land of the Dead.
Asides from Ontario Place, another location in Strange New Worlds is the Parkwood Estate in Oshawa, Ontario. The beautiful Oshawa mansion is usually unavailable to the public due to the constant filming that takes place there. Parkwood Estate hosts a bunch of attractive art and gardens, besides having cool historic furniture.
Projects like Murdoch Mysteries, Ready or Not, and Chicago had scenes that were filmed at Parkwood Estate, Canada. Some scenes in Strange New Worlds were shot at York University, located in Toronto. York University has previously been used for movies like The Prince And Me, Downsizing, and Splice.
It’s only in some episodes that we see Spike and the others out in the real world. Most of the shots are just taken in the studios with the use of CGI to make things look realistic and believable. Since The Mandalorian and other shows, Star Trek has improved its special effects.
It was Strange New Worlds’ showrunners who pitched in the concept of giving each episode a different story and vibe, making the whole show an intriguing complication of Pike’s adventures. These were the known locations for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and more places were likely featured for minor scenes within the space series.
At present, all seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are available to stream at Paramount+ and Prime Video.
