Some shows create a space in one person’s heart that can not be ever forgotten due to their impact and the way how it has managed to reach the hearts of the people who watch them. Independent Dramas have been one of the most rising forms of directorial types that have created a similar impact as it is a direct way for the creators of a show to communicate with the audience. Rūrangi is one such show that has managed to capture the eye of all the people.
The show is one of the beautifully made shows, with an impactful and emotional storyline. The writing of the show has been often appreciated by the critics at the film festivals where the show’s movie format has been screened. The show was originally made to be a five-episode long show, which was, later on, turned into a movie for screening at various film festivals in New Zealand and even internationally.
The show received so much love and appreciation that no time was wasted in turning in the show and renewing it for season 2. The show follows and picks up on the original plotline as it was in season one with more twists and turns and even fights at many points. This season the feelings are more volatile than the last one and there is a complex relationship that needs to be aligned.
This wonderful show has been created under the guidance and advisory of a panel of the trans community who gave in their valuable insight while in the writing of the show making sure the elements added were more realistic. The show was also appreciated for its almost 95 per cent queer cast and production members with most of them identifying as Non-Binary.
A brief synopsis of Rūrangi
The show is about the story of a transgender man named Caz, who is back in his childhood hometown Rūrangi. Rūrangi is a made-up fictional town in New Zealand which is remote and no one really goes around the town very much. Caz is an activist back in the city who has been working profusely to make space for him for his career. He upon returning to the town finds that there are so many things that are still the same, and many things that are not.
He realises that the town that he once left is no longer the same, as it is now more divided politically which seems the main reason for the bifurcation of the people of the town. He reconnects and reconciles with old friends and even finds love in another man. Between all of this, he also tries to get over the biggest challenge, to reconnect with his father.
Post leaving the town he has not been in contact with his father and most importantly after his transition, he has not seen him till now. The show with aesthetic visuals and soothing themes sets an environment of peace and beauty around. The show is filled with great emotions and yes, there is a good chance that you might need a couple of tissue boxes in handy.
