Frederick Alan Moranis, popularly known as Rick Moranis, is a Canadian actor best known for his enthusiastic performances in a number of Hollywood movies. He began his career as a shock jock before moving on to starring roles in films and television programs.
Strange Brew (1983), The Flintstones (1994), and Ghostbusters (1999) are some of his famous performances. He has garnered various honors and accolades for his acting as well as his voice work in several animated films. Moranis resurfaced in a number of smaller productions about a decade later, although it has been over 26 years since he last acted in a blockbuster movie as of 2022.
Moranis, now 69, announced his retirement from acting for a very important reason. Nevertheless, as he stated in an exclusive interview, he needs a strong reason to come back to the big screen. He does not consider himself to be formally retired.
Early Life
Moranis was born to Jewish parents on April 18, 1953, in Toronto, Ontario. He went to primary school with legendary Rush frontman Geddy Lee. Sir Sandford Fleming Secondary School was where he finished his A Levels. In the 1970s, he was still in high school when he began his exciting job as a disc jockey. After failing as a radio disc jockey, he gained success in his entertainment career for the first time when he starred in his 1980s Canadian sketch comedy series Second City Television.
Together with Thomas Dave, he was one of the “Mackenzie Brothers” and became well-known not only in Canada but also in the United States for his humorous portrayal of a typical Canadian male. Moranis eventually began to take on more and more prominent roles in Hollywood comedy films.
He made the most of the chance, appearing in films such as Ghostbusters, and maintaining his standing as a comic, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Flintstones, Parenting, and so on. He is also a voice actor, having given life to several of his beloved Disney characters.
What Happened to Rick Moranis?
Moranis married makeup artist Ann Belsky in 1986, and they have two children. Belsky succumbed to breast cancer in 1991 at the age of 35. Moranis revealed in a 2015 Hollywood interview that he had no intentions of retiring from acting, but he set aside time to be there for his children.
He is also a parenting hero, having given up acting to devote more time to his family and become a stay-at-home father to two children. But, he realized quickly that raising children was too challenging and began traveling to create films as a single father.
He couldn’t keep in touch with them from his hotel room or the airport. He recalled his pleasant upbringing in Toronto’s suburbs. His home was filled with music and friendly toys. Rick then decided to replicate similar excitement for his own children. As a result, he silently vanished from the public spotlight in 1997.
I had planned it as a vacation at first, but as the years passed, I found that I didn’t actually miss Hollywood. Likewise, Hollywood was taken aback when it was revealed that the comic legend “gave up his profession” to become her stay-at-home spouse. People have traditionally given up their careers to raise their children.
Rick’s stardom definitely helped his case stand out, but he wanted to live peacefully at home and raise his children with full attention, love, and care. He couldn’t understand why everyone was making a big deal about his choice of raising his children on his own and stepping down from the spotlight. In a highly male-dominated-patriarchal society, he was blurring the lines between male and female-assigned gender roles.
No wonder why women loved and respected him back in the 80s and still do. Moranis also referred to himself as “picky,” a reference to the recent slew of remakes and reboots. But he also said something along the lines of “I’m happy with the things I have said yes, and I’m happy with a lot of the things I have said no.” Absolutely, I was and will continue to be picky as it forced me to work.
Moranis also participated in a Mint Mobile commercial with Ryan Reynolds in 2020. The advertisement itself focuses on how much Moranis’ career has deteriorated since he was a great film star.
