The doctors found the blood clot to be deadly enough to kill him. The singer confessed that the idea of the possibility of his dying anytime scared him, and all he could think was about his family, especially his kids. Church, after getting the diagnosis, took time off his professional career and focused only on his surgery and rehabilitation.
It was revealed that he had taken the medical opinion of three specialized doctors before getting finally deciding on the best possible treatment plan. Church said that when he got the symptoms initially, he brushed them off as nothing.
It was his left arm that failed him when he tried to lift it, after which he noticed his arm turning red and bigger because of the swelling. Eric Church drove himself to the hospital all alone. Upon reaching, Church was immediately taken for an ultrasound, where the doctors noticed the blood clot in his chest, which was deadly enough to have killed him the same day.
The doctors revealed to him that he had a congenital disability called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, which in Church’s case was because his topmost ribcage lay too close to his collarbone leading to pressure on a major nerve running in that area.
The clot developed was under pressure enough to blow up, which according to the doctors, could have killed him anytime during the day. Eric, not realizing the gravity of the moment, assumed he would come back the next day for the surgery, but that was not going to be the case because, to the doctors, he was in critical condition and so close to death.
Church was admitted to the Duke University Hospital in North Carolina, where he was in the ICU contemplating his existence. Church went into emergency surgery to first deal with the blood clot, and a week later, he went under the knife a second time to get his topmost ribcage removed to get rid of any possibility of anything dangerous happening again.
Post-Surgery Church
Church admitted himself to the hospital in the summer of 2017, and by September 2017, he was back in the game and going on a tour with his band. The singer recalled in one of his interviews what his doctors told him about his syndrome, that not many people survive this syndrome and that athletic people between the age of twenty-one years to twenty-three years start showing symptoms.
He was lucky because in almost all cases of such a symptom, people of his age usually do not show any symptoms, and they simply end up passing away while doing daily chores, not even realizing what happened to them.
After his surgeries, Church took time to fully recuperate and indulged in physical therapy for his upper body. He still has scars from the surgery on his collarbone but he feels lucky to still be alive and for the fact that he still gets to pursue his music career.
The musician has since released two hit albums titled “Desperate Man” and “Heart & Soul” and also won the Entertainer of the Year award in 2020 at the Country Music Association Awards.
