Events Preceding Dr. Sweets Death
Dr. Sweets was killed in the opening episode of Season 10. Three men attacked Agent Booth in his own home after the ninth season of Bones concluded. Authorities looked into the death of a conspiracy blogger.
They soon uncovered a plot to extort powerful government figures. Booth managed to get the upper hand on his attackers, but he was detained on the way to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
The three individuals he shot and killed while claiming self-defense turned out to be FBI agents. The story he originally told has been changed to reflect his later claim that he was acting in self-defense.
As it turned out, the homicides were all part of a larger government operation, and whoever was in charge of pulling the strings used them to successfully frame Booth for the murder that ultimately led to his execution.
Season 10 opened with Booth already behind bars while others, including Sweets, worked feverishly to uncover who was behind all this. In the end, Booth’s innocence was proven, and he was freed from jail. He said he would look into it further, but he and Bones were taken to a parking garage, where they found Sweets dead.
Why Was Dr. Sweets Killed?
Sweets died a painful death in Episode 1 of Season 10, titled “The Conspiracy in the Corpse.” This episode premiered on September 25, 2014. Sweets was trying his best to help Booth and Temperance crack a vital case.
Sweets had always helped Booth and others to crack vital cases. He was doing the same when he got killed. He was in search of a document that could assist in this case. An assailant named Kenneth Emory attacks him and brutally assaults him.
We see an emotional scene when Sweets has a last conversation with Booth and Temperance before passing away. He was killed because he was close to finding a clue that could assist in cracking the case.
Why Did Sweets Quit The Show?
So the real reason why Sweets had to die in this series was due to John Daley’s previous commitments. People suspected several conspiracy theories about his exit. But the real reason was quite simple. The producer of this show told the media that Daley had gotten the chance to helm the direction of a movie, Vacation.
Due to his acting commitments, he could not devote time to the direction. So he decided to quit the show. Now the audience was struck with one main question. Why did the creators have to kill the character? They could have let him go with a simple explanation.
The show’s producer revealed that the death was necessary to demonstrate the impact of the same on other characters. Since Dr. Sweets was a lovable character and was deeply involved in helping the lead characters, his death would be shocking for all. It was not easy to say goodbye to Sweets.
The creatives say that this was the best decision. He would have failed to do justice to his character since he was already busy with the direction of the movie. It was important to let his character die.
Was Daley Happy To Quit The Show?
Well, according to Daley, he would have preferred to schedule his dates so that he could get a chance to act in the show. Bones was something that was very close to his heart, and he put in all his efforts and dedication to the portrayal of his character.
Hence, it was definitely not easy to say goodbye. But at the same time, he was happy with the ending, as it was quite dramatic and helped the audience sympathize with him and ponder over his character even more.
Sadly his film Vacation failed to capture the hearts of the audience. It was a flop. But he managed to prove his decision correct when he directed another movie titled “Game Night” in 2018. It was well-received and dubbed the best film of 2018. We can say that John Daley’s decision proved to be correct.
