Under the Queen’s Umbrella is an ongoing drama that premiered on Tvn on October 15, 2022. Directed by Kim Hyun-sik and starring Kim Hye-soo, Kim Hae-sook, and Choi Won-young. This story is based on the period of Great Joseon and its educational policies.
This is building its story around Queen Hwa-ryeong and her various attempt to save her children, the Grand Prince and the Crown Prince, from all the vicious people who want them dead so that they can crown their son.
The Crown Prince is suffering from a disease that is believed to be incurable, and which became the reason for the previous Crown Prince’s death as well. The Queen is still not ready to accept this and sets out to find the cure to save her child.
She strictly directs her personal servants to keep it a secret from the rest of the Palace, as they would take advantage of this situation and might end up killing him or proving that he’s not capable enough to rule the kingdom.

Under The Queen’s Umbrella: Summary
The episode starts with the Queen discovering the real truth behind real reason behind the death of the previous Crown Prince Taein and how, after his death, the life of the rest of his siblings became a living hell. They were forced to leave the Palace and were killed in cold blood.
Queen Dowager Cho pays a visit to Concert Hwang and proposes the idea of making Prince Uiseong the Crown Prince as she believes the current Crown Prince is not going to last very last. The proposal excites the Concert Hwang, and she joins hands with the Queen Dowager.
Queen Hwa-ryeong is worried about the protection of her sons after the death of the Crown Prince, who is showing little signs of progress which gives Hwa-ryeong hope, but she can seat around she has to be prepared for the worst possible scenario.
She has to make her troublemaker sons proficient enough to qualify for being the next Crown Prince in case her sons die. But soon, she was told by the minister that none of her sons qualified to succeed to the title of Crown Prince, not because they were not intelligent but because they lacked determination. This will give a chance to the Concubines and their sons.
The history that will repeat itself is the biggest fear of Queen Hwa-ryeong. The same thing happened to Queen Yoon and her sons so that it could pave the uninterrupted way to King Lee Ho. Queen Yoon tells her to forget about all the rules and regulations she should go to any lengths to save her sons so that she also doesn’t end up like her.
Everyone is playing their moves very smartly against Hwa-ryeong, who is fighting alone. She’s a very competitive and strong woman she’s not going to back down without giving them the proper fight.
Concert Hwang told Prince Uiseong to participate in cohort selection to prove to the King he should be the Crown Prince. Hwa-ryeong tries to convince her sons to participate in the cohort selection as well, but they find this thing to amuse themselves by making fun of their mother.
Furious Hwa-ryeong gets a glimpse of hope when Prince Gyeseong agrees to participate while everyone else thinks this is their perfect chance to disappear before their mother makes any other demands. They have no interest in the working of the Palace or its politics they just want to get married and go out of that place for good.
Grand Prince Seongnam gets into a fight with Prince Uiseong who has the balls to insult the Queen in front of her sons. Seongnam gives him a warning and tells him to be very careful of what he speaks, or he will be found lying on the ground. Uiseong tries to instigate him into the fight so that the watching spectators can make a big scene out of this.
Hwa-ryeong finds Gyeseong secretly disappearing into an abandoned place and follows him to know what he’s up to, but the secret surprises her, and she can’t believe what she saw with her own eyes. She gets a panic attack and runs towards the Palace, not finding a single place where she could cry her eyes out.
Outsiders always believe that Palace is the best place to be in a kingdom, you are entitled to every comfort and happiness, but they don’t know that the same place could be very suffocating and frustrating. The constant politics to win over the crown ends up killing many people.
They don’t even have to place to express their full emotions because they have to maintain the decorum which comes with the title. Hwa-ryeong runs to her old hiding place to cry in peace, where her chief servant finds her and consoles her.
She can’t waste any time crying because no matter what, the time is short, and she has to lot to prepare. Her sons surprise her the most as all of them apply for the cohort selection, even Seongnam because the Crown Prince insists he should join.
Queen Hwa-ryeong spends the whole night going through all the textbooks and marking all the important questions, and even making notes for her sons so that it would be easier for them to learn. While the other Concubines hire the best tutor for their sons, King is surprised that all his sons are participating.
The next time she shares the notes with her sons, everyone is surprised by her intelligence, determination, and competitiveness, but Grand Prince Seongnam is wrong, and something is troubling his mother.
A secret remains a secret forever it has an ugly habit of revealing itself in the worst possible situation, and Hwa-ryeong can’t let that happen to Gyeseong because that will change everything. The situation intensifies by a thousand-fold when Consort Go follows Gyeseong, believing that he’s taking secret lessons.
Hwa-ryeong, who is now living with anxiety about Gyeseong’s secrets getting out, goes to his room to check on him, but he’s in his safe hidden place, where he dresses up as a woman, and he hides his true identity from everyone.
The episode ends with the suspense of did Consort Go saw Gyeseong’s real identity or did Hwa-ryeong manages to save her son’s secret from everyone else.
