At the World Government Summit in Dubai, Lana Nusseibeh, the United Arab Emirates’ ambassador to the United Nations, emphasized the imperative of advancing towards a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict for effective regional commitment to Gaza’s reconstruction.
She highlighted the Arab consensus on the necessity of tangible progress towards a two-state solution before substantial contributions could be made towards Gaza’s rebuilding post-war.
Nusseibeh stressed the need for international oversight, benchmarks, and support from key stakeholders, particularly the United States, to ensure the credibility and sustainability of the reconstruction efforts.
Historically, Gulf states have played significant roles in post-conflict reconstruction, but the scale of destruction in Gaza after four months of war poses unprecedented challenges, with over 85% of the population displaced from their homes.
The UAE’s stance aligns with other Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, which have prioritized the establishment of a Palestinian state. Despite recent diplomatic ties between some Arab states and Israel, the call for progress toward a two-state solution remains consistent among regional partners.
The ambassador’s remarks reflect a broader recognition of the complex dynamics underlying the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the urgent need for a viable political solution to address the root causes of the ongoing crisis.
Without tangible progress towards a two-state solution, regional efforts to rebuild Gaza and promote stability in the region may face significant obstacles.
