ENGI’s twisted but entertaining mob character, Leon Fou Bartfort, has managed to capture the interest of many viewers. Although the anime may not appear as enticing through its title, Trapped In A Dating Sim is a kind of Isekai with a plot that’s not seen often.
The show is based on a light novel that goes by the same name and is made by Yomu Mishima in 2017. Seeing the web series gain many positive reviews, it was picked up by Micro Magazine and later by Jun Shiosato for a manga adaptation. The web series ended up having around 176 chapters, making it long enough to have an anime adaptation. ENGI, known for shows such as Uzaki-chan Wants To Hang Out, and The Detective is Already Dead, started airing the show from April 3rd, 2022, to June 19th, 2022.
Trapped in a Dating sim ended with about 12 episodes, enough to provide the audience with a gist of what the show is about while also leaving room for another installment. The genre of the anime is a mix of Isekai, Comedy, and Science fiction, while also showing a Harem/ Reverse Harem plot.
Trapped In A Dating Sim: What Happened in Season 1?
Season one of the show starts with an introduction to a normal white-collar worker who is seen playing an otome game for the sake of his sister. She requests him to complete it for her, and seeing her annoying whims, he accepts it. As soon as he starts the game, he hates the protagonist and the reverse harem plot, which shows women dominating this world. He manages to complete the game with 100% achievements. When he gets up, he hits his head and falls unconscious, and wakes up to see that he is now a young boy name Leon Fou Bartfort.
His father is a poor baron, and his stepmother is a rude, dominating woman who treats his father like trash. At first, Leon doesn’t realize where he is, but seeing the nature of the world, his memories of playing the game are triggered, and he finds out that he has been reincarnated into the world of the otome game he just completed. Over 10 years, Leon manages to fight back against his cruel stepmother, and using his previous knowledge, he gets ahold of Luxion, an AI ship/robot that becomes his aid. Leon then attends The Academy, a place of study where men find women who would be willing to marry them.
Once at the Academy, Leon sees the romantic interests of the game, but instead of the normal protagonist (Olivia), they are protecting a different girl. The same storyline as the game proceeds, with Marie, the new girl, instead of Olivia. Leon hopes to live in this world as just a mob character. Much to his annoyance, he ends up finding himself in front of whatever’s happening. Throughout the first season, we see him getting closer to Olivia and Angelica (Rival of Olivia in the Original Game). Through his sick and twisted attitude, he’s able to change the narrative of the game.
