Obito was a Konoha shinobi who trained under Minato with Kakashi and Rin. He was a guy who cared about everyone in the village. He had only one goal, which was becoming and surpassing all the other Hokages, pretty much like Naruto. During the third ninja war, Kakashi was the captain of Team Minato, their task was to destroy the Kannabi bridge. During the mission, everyone believed Obito died. As a dying wish, he gave his Sharingan to Kakashi.
Madara saved Obito, which we got to knew later in the series. Madara trained and cured Obito until he was able to adjust to his new limbs. Not so long after, Zetsu informed Obito that Kakashi and Rin were about to get killed by the Kiri shinobis, he rushed to the spot with Zetsu to save them. He saw Rin die in front of his eyes at the hands of Kakashi, triggering the awakening of Mangekyo Sharingan in Obito and Kakashi.
Obito then took the name of Tobi, who went on to be one of the main antagonists of the Naruto series.
