DELTARUNE Chapter 5 is now officially available as a free update, giving players the next major chapter in Toby Fox’s acclaimed RPG series. Following its reveal during the June 9, 2026, Nintendo Direct, the update launched with new story content, gameplay additions, and a message from Fox explaining what players can expect from the latest adventure.
Rather than simply introducing another chapter, Fox described Chapter 5 as one that carefully balances familiar feelings with brand-new ideas. According to the creator, the new content combines nostalgia, fresh gameplay mechanics, emotional storytelling, and comedy while taking players into a Dark World inspired by blooming plants and subtle Eastern influences. Nintendo also released several pieces of concept art alongside Fox’s comments, giving fans an early look at some of the creative ideas behind the update.
The latest release continues DELTARUNE’s ongoing story, which remains one of the most anticipated indie game projects following the massive success of UNDERTALE.
Toby Fox explains how Chapter 5 balances nostalgia with fresh gameplay
In a message published by Nintendo Japan following the release, Toby Fox highlighted the design philosophy behind Chapter 5. Instead of focusing solely on expanding the story, he emphasized creating an experience that feels both comforting for longtime fans and surprising through new mechanics.
Fox said:
“This chapter is a mix of ‘nostalgia’ and ‘freshness,’ with some funny moments, some serious moments, and a whole new level of gameplay you’ve never seen before… I hope everything is in just the right balance for you all. I hope you enjoy it!”
The developer also revealed that players will finally attend the long-awaited festival that has been teased throughout the story before venturing into another Dark World themed around blooming plants. According to Fox, this new setting introduces several fresh gameplay ideas while maintaining the emotional tone that has defined DELTARUNE since its debut.
Nintendo’s announcement also included Fox’s trademark humor. Addressing Japanese fans directly, he joked that he was typing his message “with the soles of my feet wearing geta sandals,” asking if there was “nothing strange about that.”
New Dark World introduces Eastern-inspired themes and fresh concept art
Beyond the gameplay additions, Fox shared that Chapter 5’s Dark World incorporates subtle Eastern-inspired visual elements. Players may encounter traditional architecture such as sloping rooftops and torii gates as they explore the new environment.
Nintendo also published several pieces of concept art alongside the update. The artwork features humorous character sketches, including Toby Fox’s playful comments about what Susie should wear on a date, artwork featuring Bagapan preparing to meet his mysterious girlfriend, and an illustration teasing more action-packed chapters ahead.
These pieces offer fans another look into the creative process behind DELTARUNE while maintaining the series’ signature blend of comedy and mystery.
DELTARUNE continues expanding its ambitious multi-chapter story
DELTARUNE serves as Toby Fox’s follow-up to UNDERTALE, taking place in an alternate world with an entirely new storyline. Like its predecessor, the RPG allows players to choose between fighting enemies or resolving encounters peacefully while exploring a world filled with memorable characters and hidden secrets.
Although Chapters 1 through 4 established much of the game’s central mystery, Chapter 5 continues pushing the narrative forward while introducing entirely new gameplay ideas. Nintendo has also confirmed that additional updates are already planned following the latest release, with post-launch patches already announced to refine the experience.
With Chapter 5 now available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, longtime fans can finally continue Kris, Susie, and Ralsei’s adventure while experiencing one of the game’s most ambitious chapters yet. Based on Toby Fox’s own description, players should expect a carefully crafted blend of familiar emotions, surprising mechanics, heartfelt storytelling, and lighthearted humor
