Juel Taylor’s They Cloned Tyrone is a Sci-Fi comedy that was released earlier this year on June 14th, 2023. This is the first feature film that Juel has worked as a director in, with the screenplay being co-written by Tony Rettenmaier.
The storyline revolves around Fontaine, Slick, and Yo-Yo, an unlikely trio that has to group due to an unexpected incident. Being a drug dealer, Fontaine lives all of his days in the same way, but one evening when he is returning from Slick’s house, he is fatally shot by an enemy gang.
To his surprise, he wakes up feeling fine in his bed, with no bullet marks or any injury. Since Yo-Yo and Slick Charles were there when Fontaine was shot, they are in disbelief over his return. As they try and figure out what happened that night, the trio accidentally ends up uncovering some of the government’s top-secret experiments that threaten their community.
The cast of They Cloned Tyrone consists of John Boyega, who plays the role of Fontaine, Jamie Foxx as the hilarious Slick Charles; Teyonah Parris in the role of Yo-Yo; and Kiefer Sutherland as Nixon. They Cloned Tyrone has been receiving many positive reviews, with people loving the storyline, the setting, the acting as well as the many interesting plot twists.
They Cloned Tyrone: What Happens In The Film?
When Fontaine is shot by Isaac’s group after leaving Slick Charles’ home, he is thrown away on the road. However, the next day the drug dealer wakes up like he normally does and continues about his day. He returns to Slick’s house for money, but the Pimp is baffled to see that Fontaine has no injuries or bullet marks from the previous night.
Fontaine had dismissed it as just a dream, but now that Slick confirms that he was shot the last night, he falls into a puzzling situation. Yo-Yo, their friend, had heard the gunshots as well, so Slick calls her in to further solidify his claims that Fontaine was back from the dead.
They go on a search for the car that was seen driving Fontaine’s body away, which leads them to a trap house with a lab underneath it.
This is where they find out that Fontaine was cloned and replaced when he died in the shooting. Asides from this, Yo-Yo, Slick, and Fontaine also find out about other nasty experiments that were going on in this secret facility.
As the movie goes on, we see the trio finding out more about these secret laboratories and how they were keeping a watch on the entire place. They rightfully decide to put a stop to these inhuman experiments as they were using people from Glen and secretly forcing them to behave the way a certain way through mind control.
They Cloned Tyrone: Ending Explained
As we approach the ending scene, we see that Slick and Fontaine come up with a plan to save Yo-Yo from Nixon’s men. Fontaine gets Isaac into the plan and has him pretend to shoot him. As they expected, the secret agents come in and take Fontaine to their facility while a new clone is added to his place.
Now at the facility, Fontaine gets up and threatens an employee into helping him unlock all doors leading to this underground lab. Meanwhile, Slick is busy collecting men to invade the lab.
As they arrive at the lab, the men start breaking down the labs and release all the poor subjects who were forced to be a part of the experiments.
A huge fight goes down, and Fontaine finds himself facing Chester. After being beaten up, Fontaine is taken to the main scientist’s room. The lead scientist of the experiments turns out to be none other than the “real Fontaine” himself. This older version of Fontaine reveals that the Fontaine that was living as a drug dealer was a clone of his original self.
He also lets him know that while the memories of his brother’s death are real, there’s more than Fontaine doesn’t know. When asked the reason for his plans, the Old Fontaine reveals that he wants to create a peaceful world where no one would be targeting the black community every single day.
He wanted everything to be in order, and to do that; he must create clones that worked exactly the way he wanted them to. Fontaine is appalled by him, and he uses the word “Olympia Black” to get Chester to kill the Old Fontaine. At another place, Yo-Yo and Slick manage to defeat Nixon.
They emerge victorious, and all of the clones are released, causing chaos within Glen. News reporters from all around the US are amazed by the sight of these clones running around. Yo-Yo, Slick, and Fontaine decide to go to Memphis to deal with similar labs that may be operating from the shadows.
Later, we see Tyrone, another one of Fontaine’s clones, who lives in California. He lives his life the same way Fontaine does. When he sees the news about Glen, he is shocked to see a clone that looks exactly like him. This is where the title of the film starts making sense, as Tyrone had realized they were more that looked like him, and he was possibly just a clone too.
Many more versions of Fontaine likely exist, as the Lab was not just based in Glen but in almost all of the other states. The Old Fontaine created all of this in hopes of making the world a better place to live, but he failed to do it since it was turning humans into some kind of experiment through mind control and racial discrimination.
Through its Retro-futuristic themes and costumes, the movie beautifully captures the confusion, amazement, and humor that Fontaine and his friends bring to the table. The plot isn’t too complicated but is intriguing enough to keep us wanting more of the characters.
The great music running in the background adds to the already perfect atmosphere of the grainy film. This clever Sci-Fi film deals with dramatized versions of real-life conspiracies that could be true to some extent. Seeing the whole town gang up to defeat the government lab shows that there’s strength in unity and compassion.
They Cloned Tyrone is overall an amazing film that has both interesting Sci-Fi elements and some of the best dialogues ever seen in a movie of such genre. At present, They Cloned Tyrone is available to watch on Netflix.
