There Were Times When I Wished You Were Dead Chapter 97: Recap
In Chapter 97 of “There Were Times When I Wished You Were Dead,” Lillian reads Adelaide’s diary. She wanted to know how did Duchess Duinya overcome her loss? Initially, The Duchess was in denial of Adelaide’s death, but her death was a fact that couldn’t be denied. Adelaide was cold-hearted and even, at times, cruel, yet she liked her.
But after her death, all this did was torment the Duchess. Duinya wondered why Adelaide asked her to “live” and entrusted her son to her. However, due to Duke Deluah, everything was meaningless; she wanted to find a reason to keep living but couldn’t find any. She was the only one who remembered Adelaide and thus couldn’t even die.
After reading that diary Lillian, Lillian understood that she wasn’t the only one who was struck in the past and maybe someday she too would find a reason. However, what was written next shocked her, “The prince was still searching for the country girl (Lillian).” Duinya felt Karloi was too immature and doubted he could become a proper king. The Duchess wished that it would have been Karloi in place of Adelaide.

Horrified, Lillian closed the book and wondered how Duinya coped with her loss. She thought to herself how Karloi endured for 14 years; unlike her and the Duchess, he didn’t have memories of any whole person. But she realized that he couldn’t and broke down that night. She questions whether or not did she save Karloi that day.
The scene shift to the next day, where a depressed Lillian dismisses her servants, giving an excuse that she was dizzy. Seeing this, Olivia and the maids leave to give her some space for herself. However, Olivia left a book on the table to ensure that Lillian didn’t feel bored. Reading the book did improve her mood, but she was pretty irritated at how abruptly and bizarrely the story ended.
Interacting with Olivia and the maids made Lillian feel very warm and peaceful. Lillian found that both the Countess and she shared many similarities, and both have their fair share of pain. She no longer hated Karloi; she rather sympathized with him and couldn’t stop thinking about how much pain he was currently in. The chapter ends as Lillian and Olivia go boating on the Defian River. Still, even now, Lillian can’t get Karloi out of her mind.
