In Japan, the anime will begin airing on Tokyo MX and KBS Kyoto on July 2 at 10:00 p.m. JST. This gives international fans the chance to watch the series three days before its Japanese television debut.

What Is The World Is Dancing About?

The World Is Dancing explores the history of Noh, a classical Japanese theater art that began over 600 years ago. The story follows a young boy named Zeami Motokiyo. He is one of the founders of Noh, and portrays his early life as a child actor known as Oniyasha.

Set during Japan’s Muromachi period, The World Is Dancing follows Oniyasha, a young performer growing up in his father Kan’ami’s theater troupe. While learning the art of Noh, he begins searching for his own style and way of expressing himself through dance. As he explores the meaning of performance, Oniyasha is driven by a simple but powerful question: why do people dance? The answer unfolds through a story that blends history, personal growth, and emotional discovery.

The series tells a fictionalized version of the early life of Zeami Motokiyo, one of the founders of modern Noh theater, the world’s oldest surviving theatrical art form. Through Zeami’s journey as a young performer, the story explores his growth as both an artist and a person.

The Manga Behind The World Is Dancing Anime

The World Is Dancing is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kazuto Mihara, serialized in Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine Morning from March 2021 to October 2022, with its chapters collected in six tankōbon volumes. Despite its short run, The World Is Dancing left a lasting impression on readers. The manga was praised for its strong themes, historical authenticity, and unique approach to storytelling.

The upcoming anime has already earned recognition before its premiere. On May 1, the anime received a Special Award at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, one of Asia’s largest international short film festivals and an Academy Awards-accredited event. Receiving this kind of recognition before airing is rare for an anime series and highlights the strong impression the project has made within Japan’s arts and entertainment community.

The Creative Team Behind The World Is Dancing

The staff assembled for The World Is Dancing reflects the seriousness of its subject matter. The anime is directed by Toshimasa Kuroyanagi, known for Backflip!! and The Great Passage, at CyPic. Character design is handled by Keigo Sasaki, whose previous credits include Blue Exorcist, ERASED, and Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray. Sound direction is by Yukio Nagasaki, known for Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.

The production team has also worked closely with experts to ensure the anime accurately reflects the traditions of Noh theater. Noh performer Reijiro Tsumura is overseeing the dance sequences, while calligraphy specialist Satoshi Nemoto is responsible for the title lettering. Their involvement helps bring greater authenticity to the series and shows the team’s commitment to honoring the cultural roots of the story.

The opening theme is performed by Macaroni Empitsu, while hockrockb performs the ending theme, “Unnamed Flower.” Together, the two songs help give the series a unique musical identity that complements its striking visuals.

For North American fans attending the convention, it will be the first opportunity in the world to see what comes after the opening episode. It is a rare and significant event tie-in that underscores just how much weight is behind this title heading into Summer 2026.
