They still think it is Stregobor and, thus, create a distraction so that Yen can escape and enter the chambers of Stregobor. She is hoping to find evidence to prove his fault to the other mages before the Conclave takes place. Triss and Istredd have the Book of Monoliths inside the safe of Stregobor.
The book has information about how to open the portal between the real world and the other, which could destroy humanity and other races on the Continent. It would also be very dangerous if the wrong forces got their hands on Ciri and her powers.
Also, it was Stregobor who attacked each of the Elven mages who came to study. Soon, the Book of Monoliths is extracted from the safe, but he denies having any connection to it. Although, he is arrested for being the racist he is.
Well, it is much later in the night that the two realize how big of a mistake they have overlooked, and the master of Rience is still out there. As they start putting the pieces together, Geralt and Yennefer find out that it is none other than Vilgefortz.
He is the lover of Tissaia, and she has the Book of Monoliths, which is now easily accessible to him and could cause chaos. There were other moments in the hall as well where Vilgefortz tried to convince Geralt that there was no way they could stop the upcoming conflict.
