Excited for The Winter King Episode 4? The Winter King is a brand new series on MGM Plus and Sky TV. This series is based on the beloved book trilogy The Warlord Chronicles written by Bernard Cornwell, also known for the books behind the hit Netflix series The Last Kingdom.
The Winter King is the story of King Arthur. However, it tells the tale from another perspective. Arthur is not a king but the bastard son of Uther Pendragon, the High King of Britain.
The show begins with a dramatic scene of Uther’s heir, Prince Mordred, dying in his half-brother Arthur’s arms after an ambush by the Saxons. When Arthur fails to rescue his half-brother from the slaughter, King Uther holds his illegitimate son responsible and exiles him from Britain. Now, I absolutely love this book series, and I’m so excited to cover this show.
The Winter King Episode Recap
Before diving into The Winter King Episode 4, let’s quickly recap and review the previous episode. As any show based on a beloved book series must be concerned with, The Winter King had a lot of pressure on their shoulders to create a faithful adaptation of a story many people cherish.
They made a perfectly creative decision in how to structure this show by taking the off-screen scenes and flushing them out for the audience.
We only hear the second-hand story of how Arthur was exiled. And the death of Prince Mordred. So, taking these off-stage scenes and using them as a tool to write the show was not only incredibly creative but also took the pressure off of making a scene for scene adaptation of the books.
A Kingdom without an heir is a cursed Kingdom, and so Uther feels the pressure of his son’s death and the message it sends to the other kings. He beats the defeated Arthur in his rage, nearly ending Arthur’s life.
Uther uses this opportunity to send a message to the other kings whom he has called to the capital of Dumnonia. Uther had called the armies long before this tragedy, and many of the kings had failed to send fighting men to their High King.
Now, the Prince and heir to the High King of Britain has been killed by Saxon invaders whom the other kings refused to fight. Uther is willing to end his bastard son’s life over what he perceives as a betrayal of their field to set an example of how serious the matter at hand is.
A lot more happened in previous episodes, but now let’s discuss when Episode 4 of The Winter King will be released and what will happen in it.
The Winter King Episode 4 Release Date & Preview
The Winter King Episode 4 will be released on 17 September 2023 on Epix. At the time of writing, ten episodes are scheduled for this first season. But we don’t know yet if there will be more episodes or if there will even be a second season.
The Synopsis of Episode 4 is as follows: “A former warrior turned monk narrates the narrative of Arthur Pendragon’s rise to the position of Lord of War.”
