The show The Vampire Diaries might have ended on TV, but there is still hope for the story to continue. In honor of its 15th anniversary, showrunner Julie Plec talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of bringing the show back.
The show first aired in 2009 and quickly became popular because of the love triangle between Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev, and the two vampire brothers. It ran for eight seasons and had two spin-off shows, which officially ended in 2022.
However, the show still finds new life through streaming services, and fans are eager to know if more content is on the way. According to Plec, the possibility is still there.
“Paul Wesley and I were literally just texting two days ago because he saw the news about the Twilight animated show and he’s like, ‘Why aren’t we doing this?’ And I said, ‘Good question. We should do this.’ There are so many chances to keep this world alive and keep this franchise going. For me, it’s just about the right idea and the right time, like I’m game.”
Paul Wesley, who played one of the vampire brothers, Stefan Salvatore, was an important part of the story. Stefan was the first to fall in love with Elena, and his journey through love and redemption was a key part of the show.
Stefan’s struggle with his darker, bloodthirsty side, known as his “ripper tendencies,” added depth to his character. Fans will remember that in the series finale, Stefan doesn’t survive, which leads people to wonder what Plec has in mind if the story returns.
What Could a ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Movie Look Like?
While Plec and the creators are eager to continue The Vampire Diaries, she admits that there are some challenges. By the end of the series, many of the main characters are dead, which could make it difficult to bring them back.
Another issue is the actors’ ages. In shows about immortal characters, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, actors aging can be a problem. Plec is aware of these challenges and has mentioned them before. One example was when The CW canceled the spin-off show Legacies before it had fully run its course. Plec has always been open about her desire to continue telling stories and remains hopeful.
“I personally know that there is a story that I would like to tell if anyone will have me eventually, so we shall see,” Plec shared. Paul Wesley has a simple solution to these challenges. He believes that making an animated movie, like the upcoming Twilight project, could avoid the problems that come with aging actors and dead characters.
There’s also the possibility of focusing on the next generation. In the final episode, Elena marries Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan’s brother, who has taken the cure for vampirism. As humans, aging won’t be an issue, and Legacies reveals that they have a daughter named Stefanie.
An interesting twist could be Stefanie getting pulled into the world her parents wanted to leave behind. While the details are uncertain, one thing is for sure: fans are ready to return to Mystic Falls. Until then, The Vampire Diaries is available for streaming on Max.
There is still hope for The Vampire Diaries to make a comeback, with Julie Plec and Paul Wesley discussing new possibilities. Though challenges exist, including aging actors and character deaths, fans remain enthusiastic. Whether through an animated movie or a new storyline, the love for Mystic Falls continues to thrive.
