Kinetic Content is known for its entertaining Dating shows, and its most recent launch, The Ultimatum: Queer Love, is no exception. Taking couples through a social experiment, this dating series hopes to find out if ultimatums do work out and could have a good impact on existing relationships.
Created by Chris Coelen, The Ultimatum is a reality TV show that focuses on putting couples through ultimatums, but this newest spin-off titled “Queer Love” exclusively picks out women and non-binary people as the contestants for the experiment. Chris Coelen is the creator behind other hit dating shows like Love Is Blind and Married At First Sight, so it’s no surprise that The Ultimatum had a great start as well. With an all-queer cast, this show premiered on Netflix on May 24th, 2023.
Originally, the queer version was supposed to be a part of The Ultimatum season 2, but Chris later revealed having a spin-off instead of a new installment made much more sense to him, as it could also have a new host and new way of doing things. In contrast to season 1’s hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey, the host for Queer Love was selected to be JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Reba, Freaks and Geeks).
The format of The Ultimatum: Queer Love involves couples that are ready to be married, but either of them feels it’s too soon or needs some space. Such couples are brought on to the show and made to pair up with other participants, with whom they’ll be staying for a few weeks. This is done to test the partner’s love and whether it could affect the ultimatum in any sort of way. s
After staying with the new “Partner,” they are brought back to live with their real partner and are made to decide if they’d like to get married, stay with the “fake partner,” or leave the show without anything. The goal behind Queer Love is to make it easier for unsure couples to decide what they would want for their future. The first season of Queer Love saw Lexi & Raelyn and Sam & Aussie being successfully engaged after the show’s end.
Where Is The Ultimatum: Queer Love Filmed?
Although Netflix hasn’t officially revealed the filming locations for Queer Love, one look at the show, and you’ll be easily able to guess where it’s all going down. For this season of The Ultimatum Queer Love, filming has taken place in locations spread across California. This is different from the location of the first show, as The Ultimatum was filmed in Austin, Texas.
San Diego, California
Since filming for the show took place sometime in the summer of 2022, we see most of the couples enjoying the warm and sun-kissed weather of California. If there’s anything the creators of these dating shows have learned from Love Is Blind is that putting all of the contestants together in one spot is much better than spreading them out in different places. This creates much more drama but also helps in providing significant exposure to the test couples.
Shows like The Perfect Match had it’s participating couples spread out over various locations, which ultimately led to its decreased viewership. Love is Blind, on the other hand, was rated one of the most entertaining dating shows, as it mostly has everyone living under the same roof. Asides from their homes, the Queer Love couples can also be seen hanging out in places from San Diego, which include The Yasai, a restaurant, and the Pacific Beach.
We also spot the Queer Love couples in Gaslamp Quarters, which is a perfect area for the show since it’s filled with entertainment sites and has rich nightlife. All of the contestants on this show come from different places like Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, Chicago, and other places, so making them hang out with their different partners makes sure that they can test out the relationships to the fullest. Asides from what we see in each episode of The Ultimatum Queer Love, the participants’ Instagram pages are also enough evidence suggesting that they’ve all been carrying out the dating experiment in California.
At present, The Ultimatum: Queer Love will be available to stream on Netflix.
