You have to give credit to the BBC when it comes to making quality mini-series. In this case, we have to talk about “The Sixth Commandment”, an upcoming four-part miniseries developed by Sarah Phelps under the direction of Saul Dibb with Timothy Spall in the lead.
The series —based on a true story— covers the deaths of two people back in 2014 and the trial and police investigation of Ben Field, the culprit for the deaths of these people. The series, produced by BBC One with the collaboration of Wild Mercury Productions, and True Vision Productions, aims to be a tear-jerker, true crime thriller, and today we’re going to share with you all the details about it.
What Is The Sixth Commandment About?
Peter Farquhar, a retired teacher and novelist, died in Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire, on October 26, 2015. Initially, his death was recorded as accidental due to acute alcohol intoxication. However, suspicions arose when Ann Moore-Martin, his 83-year-old neighbor, died under similar mysterious circumstances.
The deaths led to an investigation into Benjamin Field, a churchwarden and the son of a Baptist minister. Ben Field had formed “gaslighting” relationships with both Farquhar and Moore-Martin. He was later found guilty of murdering Peter Farquhar by poisoning and suffocating him.
Benjamin Field was jailed for life with a minimum term of 36 years after being found guilty of murder at Oxford Crown Court in 2019. His co-accused, Martyn Smith, who had received £10,000 from Peter’s will, was cleared of murdering Farquhar.
A BBC drama titled “The Sixth Commandment” is set to depict the events surrounding the murders, featuring Timothy Spall and Anne Reid as Peter Farquhar and Ann Moore-Martin, respectively. As of 2023, Ben Field is still serving his sentence in prison.
