After becoming a mother, Catherine earned her position in the French court by doing what she required. Right now, Henry’s affection is what she needs. He still likes Diane more, and she has a stronger grasp on Henry. She used to assist Catherine since she knew that without her children, Diane might have to consider finding Henry a new wife.
However, Diane is no longer in the mindset to sacrifice Henry since the job is now over. Catherine refuses to become like other courtesans who waste their days doing pointless things while their husbands seek younger mistresses. When Henry’s father, King Francis, passes away, things go in her favor.
Before his passing, he ensures Catherine is appointed to Henry’s privy council, making it hard for anybody to get rid of her or ignore her. During their first council meeting, Henry expresses his appreciation for Catherine’s viewpoint but is still hesitant to take her seriously.
She forewarned him that the Roman Church would attempt to overthrow his rule. The Bourbons and Guises mock her by implying that she may be the one to start the war with her hasty actions. Henry listens to her but doesn’t seriously heed her advice. The Roman Emperor eventually delivered a severed head as a message to the new monarch.
The assault on the church hasn’t shocked Catherine in the least. She had predicted it would happen as soon as Francis passed away and Henry became king of France. She could not anticipate Diane’s level of thinking, and Catherine thus underestimated her control over him.
Catherine speculated that her husband’s royal duties may have jolted him awake and caused him to consider the events of keeping Diane at a distance. Catherine is unaware that Henry won’t pick his wife—whom he has only known for about ten years—over the woman he has cherished his whole life, which is unhealthy for him.
Diane asks Henry to wear black and white, Catherine’s favorite colors, while Henry is clothed in blue on the day of the crowning to explain to Catherine how much control she has over Henry. The dress is a piece of evidence for everyone to realize how disengaged the upcoming king and queen are coming across.
Despite spending so multiple years in Diane’s shadow, Catherine underestimates her. In the future, as Charles’ coronation day draws nearer, Catherine makes sure she doesn’t underestimate Mary, who feels that the monarchy is hers now that her spouse is deceased. Catherine knows Mary’s intense hostility toward her.
Whatever details she may have learned from the letter she ultimately got, it is obvious that Mary may have been the one to relocate. The young Scottish queen Catherine is interacting with, however, is not the same naive Catherine who didn’t know how to get rid of a lady who was challenging her power.
Mary’s tenure at the French court appears to be coming to an end shortly.
