The highly awaited fantasy series The Rings of Power Season 2 will be released on August 29, 2024. This new season will bring in some notable monsters, including the ents and Damrod. The standout addition is the giant spider Shelob, who has received a detailed design update.
Shelob is a famous character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories, and she is the offspring of the legendary spider Ungoliant. Maxim Baldry, who plays Islidur, told GamesRadar at San Diego Comic-Con that the spider will be as terrifying as ever in this season.
He mentioned that there were high expectations for Shelob’s appearance and that the filming process was quite complicated. Baldry shared a behind-the-scenes detail, saying:
“From when we were filming, it was a rugby ball, two guys in morph suits and some sticks, and I was like, ‘Oh god how is this going to turn out?’”
Baldry also mentioned that Shelob has been given a strong personality and hinted at a significant conflict between his character Islidur and Shelob in the new season. The scene, which is also shown in the trailers, features Islidur in the spider’s cave facing the ferocious Shelob. Baldry described this moment as beautiful, noting the impressive and monstrous form of Shelob.
The Rings of Power Season 2 Shows Islidur’s Key Role
In the same interview, Baldry talked about how his character Islidur will play a crucial role in the storyline. He shared that Islidur will face abandonment by his family and nation while fighting for survival, which will be a major part of Season 2.
Islidur will also battle many monsters in the new season. Baldry mentioned he has enjoyed playing his character physically. While the season is expected to have dark and gory moments, the actor revealed a lighter detail: Islidur will experience love for the first time this season.
The teased love interest is likely Estrid, played by Nia Towle. Season 2 may explore a significant relationship between Islidur and Estrid, with set photos showing their close interactions.
The Rings of Power Season 2 will premiere on Prime Video on August 29 with the first three episodes available. The previous season is also available for streaming on the same platform.
