MSNBC announced in August 2008 that The Rachel Maddow Show would take over Verdict’s 9:00 p.m. time slot from Dan Abrams the following month. Following its premiere, the show consistently outperformed Countdown as MSNBC’s highest-rated program.
Maddow’s show doubled its audience that hour after more than a month on the air. Maddow became the first openly homosexual or lesbian host of a primetime news program in the United States due to this broadcast.
From the start, the show received glowing reviews. Maddow has emerged as the “star of America’s television news,” according to Los Angeles Times journalist Matea Gold and The Guardian. In mid-May 2017, despite many Trump administration difficulties, MSNBC outperformed CNN and Fox News in news ratings. Maddow has noted that her show’s purpose is to “raise the quantity of valuable information on the planet”. “Don’t listen to what they say; listen to what they do… because reporting a fast-paced story is simpler when you’re not sidetracked by whatever the White House denials are,” she advised Trump administration reporters.
Maddow’s shows typically begin with a lengthy report, frequently lasting more than 20 minutes, dubbed the “A-block.” This usually starts with clips from previous years or decades of movies and other media, which she then connects to current events.

Prior to the event, the White House issued a statement indicating that Trump paid $38 million in federal income taxes in 2005. The White House also accused MSNBC of “violating the law” by publishing Trump’s 2005 tax returns.
The Rachel Maddow Show eclipsed Fox News’ Hannity as America’s highest-rated cable news show in March 2018, according to Variety. “Maddow averaged 3.058 million viewers for the month, just ahead of Hannity’s 3.00 million,” the publication reported.
In July 2019, the show ranked fifth in overall cable ratings, with an average of 2.5 million viewers, after Hannity (3.3 million), Tucker Carlson Tonight (3.1 million), The Ingraham Angle (2.6 million), and The Five (2.5 million).
The show had its highest ratings in history in early 2021, averaging 4.3 million viewers in January and 3.7 million in February, making it the highest-rated program on American cable television, including non-news programming, and it also had the most viewers in the 25-54 age demographic for cable news. By June 2021, The Rachel Maddow Show had fallen to the sixth position, with only 289,000 viewers in the crucial 25-54 demographic.
