Based on Naomi Alderman’s novel, The Power, a show of the same name is soon going to be released. The show, The Power, explores what would happen if the power dynamics of the world got unbalanced and the roles reversed. Created by Raelle Tucker, Naomi Alderman, and Sarah Quintrell, the show is set for release on March 31st, 2023.
The series is set in a world similar to ours, except for one minor change. In their world, women find themselves as the stronger gender with the Power to electrocute people at their fingertips. Young girls, all of a sudden, find themselves with the Power of electrocution, eventually using it to get back their freedom.
The Power stars Toni Collette in the role of the town mayor, Margot Cleary-Lopez. She is the one who sides with the young girls and tries to keep them out of jail when the men of their world try to tame them. Auli’i Cravalho is cast as Margot’s daughter, Jos Cleary-Lopez, one of the few girls who initially get the Power.
John Leguizamo plays the role of Margot’s husband, Rob, who tries to help his daughter learn the limits of her Power and control them. Toheeb Jimoh is cast as a rookie journalist, Tunde, trying to make it big, all the while trying to cover the stories of the young women who found themselves with the superpower.
Ria Zmitrowicz as Roxy Monke, along with Halle Bush as Allie, are among the few originals who find themselves with the superpower.
The Power: Episodes Summary
The science-fiction show has an all-female writing team, and the show as a whole takes a female-centered approach. The Power feels like a commentary on the Power struggles between the two common genders, and it does so not very subtly. The show is trying to figure out exactly what would happen if the world power balance tips from being more inclined toward the male gender to being more inclined towards the female gender.
The trailer felt like a full package with teen drama, world politics, and some heartwarming moments along with female Power. What starts with just the young teens gets spread to the older women too, and the show takes us all over the world, from London, Nigeria, and Seattle to Europe, to see the world change.
The first few episodes are expected to get into the nature of the natural phenomena that gave the girls the Power, along with the girls figuring out that they have something special within. Chaos would likely ensue with world leaders trying to prevent women from actually using their Power as if they do not control women’s bodies enough already.
Gender roles would be reversed, and the world would enter a new era with women just as, probably even more, powerful than men.
