A judge arbitrates civil litigation cases in a mock courthouse setting on The People’s Court, a USA reality judicial program based on arbitral proceedings. It is the inaugural dispute settlement reality-style broadcast in the courtroom entertainment genre that has largely established itself as the norm. The latest relaunch premiered in 1997, while the initial program lasted from 1981 to 1993.
First-run distribution has been used for both renditions. As of the year 2022–23, with the current season, the series had 38 seasons in total, ranking it as the second-longest-running judicial broadcast worldwide as well as the longest-running conventional legal program.
This courtroom sequence, which was used as a model for other judicial programs, has a magistrate hearing small-claims cases. The case’s plaintiffs consent to dismissing their claims in exchange for having the issue shown on the program. The ruling is merely an arbitration clause that the parties to the dispute agree to adhere to because the program does not involve an actual courthouse.
Since the case was resolved, the producers wrote to actual plaintiffs and defendants listed in district court records to ask if they would want to try their case in the People’s Court. However, after the case was resolved, they were no longer able to file their case in the official courts. While keeping a feeling of duplicity, this structure has given the series more authenticity. The show has entertained its specific audience for years and continues to do so.
