The Patient is the next FX series made for Hulu by the same team that brought you The Americans. It stars Steve Carell as Dr. Alan Strauss, a therapist kidnapped by one of his patients, Sam (Domnhall Gleeson), a serial murderer who begs Alan’s aid in healing him.
A tight chamber work follows in which Alan and Sam come to know one other under risky conditions. Can Alan stop Sam from murdering again? Will Sam vent his rage onto Alan? We’ll be looking for solutions to these key questions in the coming weeks.

The Patient Episode 6 Recap
The Patient’s sixth episode has Candace questioning Sam about the murder. She nudges him, “Don’t give up on counseling.” Naturally, that would rely on his therapist’s ability to work again. Alan dissociates to stop thinking about the horrific incidents. In his head, he simulates a therapy session with Charlie, a former therapist. Alan asks Charlie for assistance. In front of Sam, he is struggling to maintain his composure. Sam, who is completely devoid of empathy, is in control; therefore, he needs a strategy. Alan is making excuses, according to Charlie.
Sam’s digging in the adjacent room causes Alan to regain consciousness. Sam, however, does not complete preparing Elias’ burial by himself. He makes the therapist believe that Alan should bear some of the blame for Elias’ passing since he is angry with him for not stopping the crime.
Alan is left alone when Sam goes with his thoughts and a shovel. As nightmares of being imprisoned in a Holocaust death chamber afflict him, he dissociates to reconnect with Charlie. Charlie has no idea why he avoids conflict. Alan maintains that he lacks adequate power. Charlie, on the other hand, is skeptical that he has done everything possible. Furthermore, he compels Alan to confront a sensitive subject for Sam: the reality that Sam’s mother has some responsibility for the abuse Sam has endured.
Sam comes back, and Alan convinces him to leave Elias’ body, which is a test of empathy. He argues that Elias’ parents will benefit greatly from this. Sam concurs, but it is clear that he is not acting in a kind or concerned manner. He most likely agrees out of a sense of duty to complete what he’s begun with these treatment sessions. Alan places a letter with Sam’s name on it and a message to his children telling them he loves them on Elias’ lips while Sam uses the restroom.
Fortunately, Sam doesn’t appear to notice when he spills ink over his own hands while dragging the body out of the home. When Alan hears his wife sing the line, “Not by might and not by might, but by spirit alone,” he sighs as he recalls the song. We won’t be burying Elias today. However, it still leaves an open grave in the adjacent room.
The Patient Episode 7 Preview
Sam and Dr. Strauss attempt to form new relationships as they look for the tranquility that seems to elude them. After the conclusion of Episode 6, Episode 7 could finally engage the law in Sam’s life. That will undoubtedly mark a significant turning point for Alan, but will it be for the better or worse? Will Sam uncover Alan’s whereabouts and bury him in the grave he so skillfully dug, or will the cops come to his rescue?
The next episode’s title, Kaddish, and Alan’s mention of his kids in the letter imply that it will go more deeply into the factors that led to the Strauss father-son relationship failing. Why not two families when the bonds and problems of one are revealed?
The upcoming episode could examine Sam’s mother’s indirect abuse of him as a result of her ignorance when he was a youngster. Even halfway through the season, Sam’s background remains a mystery. This might shed some light on it. Whether good or terrible, Episode 7 will determine how the next episodes pan out and what it implies for the Patient and the therapist.
