The Nun 2 is a direct sequel to “The Nun”, a film from 2018 that marks the ninth part of a greater horror series of films called “The Conjuring Universe.” This movie, The Nun 2, takes place in the 1950s, four years after what went down in its predecessor; it focuses on a nun named Irene who lives in a French educational institution in which some demonic apparitions take place in the form of an entity named Valak, the Nun.
Now, Irene must face Valak, protect the children of the school, and bring back the calm to the boarding school. Starring Jonas Bloquet, Bonnie Aarons, and Taissa Farmiga under the direction of Michael Chaves, the movie’s filming locations are the focus of our discussion today because the places chosen and the way in which the action takes place make the filming locations a cast member in themselves.
Now, without any further ado, let’s begin showcasing the places that Michael Chaves chose to bring to life this horror film set in the 1950s.
The Nun 2 Filming Locations
The Nun 2 was filmed in France, in a location called Bouches-Du-Rhone, “Mouths of the Rhone”. Photography kicked off in early October 2022 after a few delays and concluded in December 2022.
Initially, this movie was supposed to kick off between 2019 and 2020, but due to the film restrictions due to COVID, the producers had to wait it out a bit.
Fun fact: Michael Chaves is the director that has helmed most of the films within the “The Conjuring Universe”, having directed “The Curse of la Llorona” in 2018, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” in 2021, and “The Nun II” in 2023.
Bouches-Du-Rhone, France
This movie was filmed in a region in the southwest of France called Bouches-du-Rhone, near Provence, with the bulk of its photography taking place at an abandoned church in the vicinities. The church in question is called the Convent of the Preachers (Couvent des Precheurs) in Aix-En-Provence.
Michael Chaves and his filming crew used several places in and around the church, like its cloister, halls, and courts, to film the movie while also employing decoration and clever use of lighting effects to give the horror film its chilling ambiance.

Marseille
A few iconic outdoor shots and scenes were also shot in the famous and multicultural city of Marseille; if you look closely, you’ll see shots of the Notre Dame de la Garde basilica, the Palais Longchamp, the Marseille Cathedral, and other streets of that city. Marseille is the second largest city in France, facing the Mediterranean; it is a city full of history and gastronomy and is iconic to French culture.
Many films like The French Connection, Netflix’s Marseille starring Gerard Depardieu, Stillwater, The Red Circle, Cedric Jimenez’s BAC Nord, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Bourne Identity, and The Transporter 3 were shot in this city where there’s always something to look at, to watch and to enjoy.
Other Filming Locations
To complement the ambiance of the French locations put on film, Michael Chaves and his crew chose several other places around Southern France’s rural scenarios to add ambiance and dark rural moods to the movie.
Some of these places are Tarascon, at the western-most part of Bouches-du-Rhone, a place full of bridges, medieval castles, cobbled stone streets, and historical landmarks like the Saint-Marthe of Tarascon Church, its historic town center, with Rue de Halles, where some alleyway shots were taken, as well as the former barracks of Casernes Kilmaine.
Martigues, a small commune between Marseille and Bocuhes-du-Rhone, nicknamed the “Venice of Provence,” was also picked by Michael Chaves’s film crew to make some outdoor scenes.
Fun Fact: Martigues is the birthplace of poet Charles Maurras, and singer Clara Luciani. And with these last pieces of trivia, we wrap up our coverage of The Nun 2’s filming locations.
