This episode was the second-to-last of the season, with only one more left to conclude Christian and Coco’s stories. The true story of ‘The New Look’ mainly revolves around Christian and Coco’s fashion careers.
In episode 8, we learned about Christian’s father’s death, and now, in episode 9, another major character is lost. Throughout the season, viewers have also come to know the people close to the main characters of ‘The New Look.’
Family played a significant role for both designers, with Coco taking care of her nephew André and Christian doing the same for his sister Catherine. Despite their different paths, Coco and Christian’s lives have had consistent parallels throughout the series.
Episode 8 of “The New Look” focused on Elsa’s addiction to drugs. Elsa’s character development has been up and down, especially in her friendship with Coco.
They were finally getting along, but Elsa’s drug problem caused trouble, leading to her getting caught trying to steal from a pharmacy.
Episode Recap
In Episode 9, there’s a flashback to when Elsa and Coco were teens, showing how close they are. Coco grew up without parents, and Elsa became like a sister to her over time.
Even though Coco says she’s done with Elsa, she knows they’ll always be connected. She tells Elsa to leave, but Elsa stays anyway.
Since Christian decided to start his own fashion house in Episode 5 of “The New Look,” he’s been struggling to make it work. His stubbornness is often the cause.
Christian doesn’t want to upset his designer friends, so he hasn’t been able to move forward with his business. In Episode 8, this meant he had no models because he wouldn’t take any from other designers, even though everyone was already busy.
Although Christian found a model in an unusual way, he faced the same problem with seamstresses in Episode 9. With the House of Dior’s opening coming up, Christian didn’t have enough seamstresses to make his collection.
Luckily, he found a new head tailor in Pierre Cardin, an eccentric he’d met before. Still, Episode 9 showed that Christian keeps getting in his own way when it comes to success.
She met Mr. Friedman, whose daughter Tania was at the same camp as Catherine. Catherine pretended not to remember Tania, but Mr. Friedman gave her Tania’s picture hoping to spark her memory.
In Episode 9, Mr. Friedman attended Mr. Dior’s funeral, a friend of Catherine’s father. After the service, he confronted Catherine, wanting to know what happened to Tania.
With encouragement from Christian, Catherine finally confessed. At the camp, Catherine stole bread and shared it with Tania. When the Nazis found out, they wrongly accused Tania, beating her and putting her in the oven while still alive.
It was a very emotional moment. Instead of being angry, Mr. Friedman showed compassion. He hugged Catherine, saying they were just kids who should never have been in that terrible situation. This helped Catherine ease her guilt, realizing they were innocent children caught up in a horrific event.
