In the previous chapter, Rakrak took aim at Shunen with unclear intentions. This has left readers in suspense, wondering if Rakrak will follow through and fatally harm Shunen in the next chapter of The Nebula’s Civilization.
Shunen had been mentoring Rakrak on improving his archery skills, explaining that precision and timing are just as vital as brute strength when handling a bow.
Despite Rakrak’s ability to strike a target, Shunen illuminated how much more practice was needed to reach the level of their warriors. Real combat requires stopping or slowing a moving adversary first before striking a final piercing blow.
In a gesture of good faith, Shunen promised to construct Rakrak, a custom bow utilizing simple materials, if their blossoming camaraderie continued.
This notion did not seem to resonate with Rakrak at the moment.
Now, Rakrak grapples with an unsettling feeling he cannot reconcile with Shunen. He determines the only course of action is to directly confront Shunen for clarity, not fully aware of what he aims to gain from the interaction.
Recap and Review
Ian directed Yur to escort the women and children who were exhausted from travel by boat, ensuring their safe departure.
Rakrak proposed a strategic plan of attack to Ian – take a group of their grayish-brown scaled warriors to divert the frogmen’s attention at the rear of the village.
Then, while distracted, Rakrak would lead the black-scaled aquatic lizardmen in a surprise swim assault from the water. He felt confident that under the moonlight, their dark scales would remain unseen until reaching striking distance.
Ian sought reassurance that Rakrak’s risky plan was sound. Rakrak’s confidence stemmed from their dwindling numbers compared to the frogmen and the lizardmen warriors being newly empowered with blessings from their deities.
Once Rakrak and his squad stealthily swam into an offensive position undetected, they rapidly launched a shock ambush attack on the bewildered frogmen.
Unsure of the assault’s origin point, the frogmen panicked at the sight of the lizardmen’s headed god amidst the chaos. In desperate pleas, the frogmen appealed to their own sacrificial offerings as salvation.
As some frogmen futilely attempted to retreat and plead for their non-existent god’s intervention, Rakrak callously reminded them that the deity had long been vanquished.
The fleeing frogmen were ultimately captured by the encircling lizardmen warriors.
Amidst the ongoing attack, the lizardmen realized Shunen had wandered off from the group on a solo mission. Concerned over his safety since he was alone, search efforts commenced to locate the missing Shunen.
Having encountered a large hostile group of frogmen, panic set in for the outnumbered Shunen. He lamented that despite his tribe’s venomous weapons and arrows, they failed to adequately defend themselves against this resistant adversary. Even Shunen’s father lost control and influence over the raging lizardmen warriors.
Finally discovering the terrified Shunen’s hiding location, Rakrak appealed to his sense of duty and valor as a warrior. He extended the gracious offer for Shunen to die with the honor befitting a warrior.
Rakrak pressured the reluctant Shunen further by commanding him to take up arms, which was met by desperate pleas from Shunen to spare and save his life.
Spoilers and Expectations
Desperate, Shunen appealed to Rakrak’s sense of friendship, saying he harbored no ill feelings toward the lizardmen kind. He explained they shared a common enemy in the form of the two-headed monster that threatened them all.
In an attempt to dissuade his aggression, Shunen offered to share a valuable tribal secret regarding crafting bows with Rakrak. This ploy managed to spark Rakrak’s curiosity to hear more before deciding Shunen’s fate.
Shunen described the key ingredient for making these bows – using the tendons from the limbs of a particular beast. When Rakrak insisted on knowing which creature, Shunen reluctantly admitted they harvested tendons from slain lizardmen, much to Rakrak’s anger and disgust.
