Nintendo has acknowledged that demand for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2 has exceeded its expectations, leaving special-edition hardware and software difficult to find in several markets. Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s vice president and general manager for Latin America, described the response as a “global phenomenon” and confirmed that the company is working to replenish supplies.
In an interview with Coelho, van Zyll explained that Nintendo anticipated a positive response but underestimated the scale of interest. He also acknowledged strong demand in the United States, where pre-orders and special-edition products have contributed to the growing excitement surrounding the remake.
The comments offer reassurance to fans hoping to purchase the upcoming game or the limited-edition Nintendo Switch 2 hardware celebrating the franchise’s 40th anniversary.
NINTENDO ADMITS IT UNDERESTIMATED ZELDA REMAKE DEMAND
The remake has attracted considerable attention since its announcement, with interest increasing following its gameplay reveal. The gameplay trailer had surpassed 10 million views on Nintendo of America’s YouTube channel by October 17, 2026. The game has also appeared on multiple bestseller charts based on pre-orders.
Discussing the unexpectedly strong response, van Zyll said Nintendo was experiencing supply shortages across multiple regions. He apologized to customers who had been unable to secure products and explained that pre-sales were reaching their limits in some markets, including Brazil.
“We expected a positive response, but the magnitude, I mean, it’s amazing,”
van Zyll told Coelho.

Nintendo is now working to replenish both hardware and software, although the executive cautioned that fulfilling demand would take time. He did not provide a specific timeline or the number of additional units planned for distribution.
40TH ANNIVERSARY SWITCH 2 RESTOCK CONFIRMED, BUT NO DATES YET
The biggest news for collectors is that Nintendo plans to restock the The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 console and related accessories. When asked whether the special-edition system would return, van Zyll confirmed that replenishments were being planned.
“Yes. I can’t tell you dates right now. We’re working on it. I can’t tell you quantities right now,”
he explained during the Coelho interview.
The planned replenishment covers the special hardware, the anniversary controller, and software. However, Nintendo has not announced a universal restock date or confirmed how many units will be made available in each region.
The anniversary console features Zelda-inspired design details, including a Triforce motif. Nintendo previously announced that the console would launch on October 29, ahead of the remake’s November 5 release. The company also revealed anniversary accessories as part of its 40th-anniversary celebrations.
WHEN DOES OCARINA OF TIME RELEASE ON SWITCH 2?
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. The remake features substantially upgraded visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, and revised camera and movement controls.
For fans who missed the initial pre-orders, Nintendo’s restock plans offer hope, but buyers will need to wait for region-specific announcements. In the United States, Best Buy has also announced a launch-night event with limited quantities of the anniversary console, Pro Controller, and game available at participating stores.
Nintendo’s comments make clear that demand has surpassed its initial expectations. Whether the planned replenishments will be sufficient to meet demand remains to be seen.
