Indian shows on streaming platforms have been doing extremely well as of late, and The Freelancer is no exception. With Mohit Raina, Anupam Kher, and Kashmira Pardeshi in the lead roles, one can always expect a fabulous performance on screen, especially when paired with Neeraj Pandey’s writing. Based on Shirish Thorat’s 2017 book A Ticket to Syria, the show has been received exceptionally well by audiences.
The first four episodes of the show, which have been released so far, have been filled with action, emotion, a handful of different plot twists, and, of course, a highly engaging story. The Freelancer Episode 5 will keep this momentum going, bringing in more questions that must be solved and perhaps tying up some loose ends as well.
Episodes 1 to 4 were released on the 1st of September, 2023 (Friday) on the streaming platform Disney+. The show’s runtime is about 55 minutes for the first three episodes and around 40 minutes for the fourth.
Before we jump into the possibilities of The Freelancer Episode 5 and what it can mean for the story, let’s take a quick recap of the show first.

Everything That Happened Till Episode 5 of The Freelancer
This show undoubtedly has one of the most fast-paced yet intricate plots I’ve seen in a while. The story revolves around Aliyah Khan (played by Kashmira Pardeshi), who is tricked into an ISIS-controlled region, and Avinash Kamath (played by Mohit Raina ), who is indeed The Freelancer.
Aliyah is a 21-year-old girl who has recently married Mohsin Fazal (who comes from a rich family currently living in Malaysia) and is about to go through the most brutal experiences she could imagine. Things start to go awry pretty quickly when their honeymoon turns into a kind of family trip, and Mohsin and his family start to do things that Aliyah was given no prior knowledge of.
Soon enough, Aliyah’s parents can no longer reach her, and the tension and worry begin to build as the girl and her in-laws go completely off the grid for a week. The prime point of interest here is Aliyah’s father, Inayat Khan, an ex-policeman in Mumbai. In the trailer, too, we see that Inayat had been fired from the police force for a supposed ‘misconduct,’ though it’s still unclear as to what exactly transpired.
For reasons unknown to anyone except himself, the man seemingly commits suicide by driving forcefully into the American embassy and getting shot immediately. While his wife, Sabeena, grieves the sudden death of her husband, she’s also faced with the rising terror of losing her daughter forever to religious extremists.
This is where Avinash Kamath is a mercenary who’s made a name for himself in his line of work. He’s shown to be ruthless but never impulsive nor unprepared and works largely with Dr. Arif Khan, the brains behind his missions. Avinash himself has a rather tragic backstory, which has been shown in the first two episodes.
What becomes apparent by and by is how brainwashed Mohsin and his family are into thinking that what they do in the name of religion is right. The extent of this can be seen in every action he does, from kidnapping his wife and becoming violent with her to subjecting her to horrors one can’t even imagine. Ex-colleagues and close friends with Inayat, Avinash vows to himself and Sabeena to bring Aliyah home well and alive and to keep her safe until he can get to her.
This is essentially what forms the crux of the show. Another interesting dimension of the story is that until now, Avinash has had the luxury of being emotionally distant from his missions as a mercenary. However, this time, it is not something he can bring himself to do.
Episode 4 of the show brought a new disaster when Mohsin’s brother and sister-in-law involved themselves in a pre-meditated suicide bombing in the town of Raqqa. At this point, Aliyah realizes with horror the extent of Mohsin’s insanity as he records the explosion with a smile.
Once again, coming face-to-face with what the hell probably looks like, Avinash has a new, far more daunting reality looming over him now- no one knows when Mohsin may choose to force Aliyah to do the same with him.
The Freelancer Episode 5: Predictions & Spoilers
The lack of a trailer or a preview for the upcoming episodes has not prevented viewers from speculating about what comes next. You can check out the show trailer here:
The first part has laid out several sub-plots along with the main story, though as of now, it seems that everything may ultimately tie into Aliyah’s escape story.
The mystery of Inayat’s death, how Mohsin and his family became so radicalized, Aliyah and Avinash’s extremely brave and skillful teamwork and the Freelancer’s tussle with the CIA are the only clues that would lead to a significant conclusion.
