A couple named Andrew and Eric, who are a gay couple, have an adopted daughter, Wen, who is adopted from China. The family decides to go on a vacation, and they rent a cabin in the secluded woods. Wen is a curious child, is goes out exploring during her vacation in the woods. But one day, when Wen is outside collecting insects, a strange man approaches her, telling him that he wants to be friends with her. The stranger tells Wen that he and his other three friends need to meet and talk with Wen’s family. Scared, Wen runs back to her house but is followed by the four strangers. They show up and knock on their cabin’s door.
These four strangers are named Redmond, Leonard, Sabrina, and Adriane. These four strangers manage to break into the cabin and take Andrew, Eric, and Wen captive. They tell the family that they have come to present an important mission to them, which can ultimately save the entire world, telling the family that the fate of the world is in their hands. The strangers tell the family that one of the family members must be killed and sacrificed for the greater good in order to put a stop to the upcoming apocalypse.
The four invaders tell the family that they saw visions about the apocalypse and how it could be stopped and came together after meeting on the internet, deciding to join hands together and complete this God-given task as they were the chosen ones. The family is taken aback, frightened, and doesn’t entirely believe what these four strangers are telling them. But they are also scared and torn between two minds because what if? What if these people are telling the truth and something bad actually happens if they refuse to cooperate and make a sacrifice?
The story is narrated by the adopted daughter, Wen. The book has seven characters, and all of them play an important role in the book. The four strangers who hold Wen and their parents hostage are convinced that if one of them sacrifices themselves, it will be all for the greater good as it will help stop the incoming apocalypse.
