The anime follows the neighbors to lovers plot, which is a very rare yet interesting slice-of-life anime plot. The main protagonist is Amane Fujimiya, who is a high school student. Fujimiya is a very messy person and lacks basic conversational abilities. He never cleans his room and hates cooking and so he almost always eats junk food.
His neighbor is a girl named Mahiru Shiina, who is the polar opposite of him. She is the most popular girl in his school as she displays excellent athletic and mental skills, and on top of that, she’s extremely beautiful, giving her the nickname “Angel”.
Despite being neighbors, Fujimiya never talked to her, believing she was “out of his league” until one day, he finds Shiina alone during rainfall. He walks up to her and offers her an umbrella as a nice gesture. The next day Mahiru visits Fujimiya to return his umbrella and witnesses the mess he calls his room. She scolds him and cleans his room, and from that point begins their relationship.

The episode begins with the beginning of the new year in the anime. Mahiru and Amane wish each other and wish they remain together for another year. Amane receives several text messages as new year wishes, along with his mom’s message, which informs him about her visit. Amane turns to tell Mahiru about this when she falls asleep on his shoulder. He thinks of several ways to wake her up, but believing that she’s exhausted, he lets her sleep on his bed.
In the morning, Amane wakes Mahiru up, and she gets flustered by seeing her situation. He claims that Mahiru was pretending to be asleep but doesn’t stretch it too far. Amane’s parents arrive and are greeted by both Mahiru and him. They inform Amane that they want Mahiru to go with him to the shrine and that they have bought a kimono for her.
After refusing at first, Amane agrees and dresses up. He gets complimented by Mahiru, which leaves him blushing. They reach the shrine and hold hands as Mahiru’s condition is weak due to the cold.
The news of Mahiru roaming in a shrine with a boy spread like wildfire in the school, and everybody starts talking about it. Amane tells Mahiru about it and belittles himself by saying someone like him could never be her boyfriend. Mahiru gets angry and “aggressively” compliments Amane, which leaves her embarrassed.
