Tetsuya Nomura has revealed that Kingdom Hearts 4 will finally introduce a game-design idea that the development team originally wanted to implement in Kingdom Hearts 3. The revelation came during the “Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts” panel at D23 2026, where Nomura discussed how the series approaches the design of its Disney-inspired worlds.
The comment gives fans another intriguing detail about the long-awaited sequel, although Nomura did not reveal exactly what the previously unrealized idea is. That distinction is important because the comment refers to overall game design, rather than confirming that a particular Disney property will appear in Kingdom Hearts 4.
Nomura Teases a Long-Planned Kingdom Hearts 4 Idea
While discussing the benefits of building worlds around broader concepts instead of directly recreating specific films, Nomura explained that this approach gives the team greater freedom with level design, gameplay mechanics, and storytelling.
He then revealed that Kingdom Hearts 4 contains an idea the developers had already considered during Kingdom Hearts 3.
“When it comes to the overall game design, for Kingdom Hearts 4 there’s actually an idea that we had since Kingdom Hearts 3, that we weren’t able to realize just because of certain difficulties,”
Nomura said during the D23 panel.

Nomura added that the team was now able to realize the concept in the new game and called it “a very, very exciting idea.” However, he stopped short of explaining what the feature actually involves.
That has already fueled speculation among fans. Some theories have connected the comment to a potential Disney world, including long-running speculation about Star Wars, while others believe the idea could instead involve a gameplay mechanic or party system. Importantly, Nomura did not identify the idea as a new world, so those theories remain speculation.
The reveal arrives alongside a major new wave of Kingdom Hearts 4 information. Square Enix has confirmed a late-2027 release window, while the latest footage introduced Pixar’s Coco as a new world and showed more of Sora’s journey through Quadratum.
For now, fans will have to wait to discover which Kingdom Hearts 3 idea finally made the transition into Kingdom Hearts 4.
