Kotarou is a lonely young man who has returned to his hometown of Hachioji. When he was young, he had a past encounter with a Tengu. This is a love story between a human and a Tengu set in Hachioji.
Are you curious about what a Tengu is? In Shintoism, there is a category of mythical being known as the Tengu. In Buddhist rituals, they were first considered demonic, but today they are viewed as a category of yōkai (supernatural entities) or Shinto kami (gods or spirits).
The story starts with a little flashback of a human boy named Kotarou getting lost in the woods, where he falls from a great height on a fox. While he is crying, a Tengu lady comes to help him; she then heals his wounds and helps him find his way back home.
Fast-forward to the present, where Kotarou is an adult and works in his new home. When a new couple travels to Mt. Takao, Kotarou has to introduce them to the town. They come over a tree while Kotarou directs them to the new place, and a powerful wind blows.
Kotarou tells the couple this was where he was abducted as a kid, according to his relatives. Kotarou says he doesn’t remember it, but it looks like his body does. To his surprise, he also feels like the forest is telling him not to go back there.
Now they have reached track number one, while Kotarou is introducing them to the new area, they encounter a strong gush of wind flows. He sees some familiar wings, and he follows them to eventually reach the tree where he had gotten lost when he was a small kid.
Kotarou starts to remember everything upon reaching that place, and as he reaches, he sees the Tengu lady again; she tells him not to come to that place again because there won’t be a third time. Kotarou, in shock, runs back from the forest to the couple, and they all leave.
At night, Kotarou decides to go back into the forest to find the Tengu lady, and on his way to the forest, he trips and falls from a great height; he falls on a fox, a huge one, and faints. The Tengu lady comes and tries to wake him up. Suddenly Kotarou gets flashbacks of his childhood, how he had got lost here, and how the Tengu lady helped him.
Kotarou asks the Tengu lady if she remembers them meeting and her healing him, the Tengu lady blushes and then lightly screams, saying there is no way she could forget that. She asks him if he doesn’t know the village rules, which reminds Kotarou of the third time warning, which he ignored and still returned to the forest. The Tengu lady hugs Kotarou and tells him the rule:: if two people meet three times under the sacred tree, they must get married.
