Both companies have heavily invested in AI infrastructure, and their quarterly earnings reflected this strategy’s success.
Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing platform reported a remarkable 31% revenue increase, with AI services contributing 7 percentage points to this growth.
Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood noted that near-term demand for AI surpassed the company’s capacity, underscoring the need for continued infrastructure expansion.
Similarly, Google, under Alphabet, experienced a 28% surge in cloud revenue, driven by robust growth in Google Workspace.
This platform offers a range of AI-powered features, leveraging Alphabet’s advanced language model, Gemini. The strong financial results stood in stark contrast to Meta Platforms’ cautionary forecast, which saw its stock plummet by 10% the previous day.
Analysts interpreted these results as evidence of the immediate returns on AI investments. D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria emphasized Microsoft’s leadership in the “GenAI” environment, contrasting it with Meta’s indication that returns on increased investments might be years away.
The positive earnings reports also had a ripple effect, boosting Amazon.com’s stock by 3.4% ahead of its upcoming earnings announcement.
Analysts noted the aggressive capital expenditure on AI by major cloud companies, viewing it as an important strategic move in an increasingly competitive landscape.
