Today is a great day for Takopi’s Original Sin fans, as the anime has won the Jury Award for a TV Series at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious animation events. The Takopi’s Original Sin was announced as a winner during the festival, which took place from June 21 to 27 in Annecy, France.

The award is a major achievement for the series, placing it among the top television animation productions worldwide. Since its debut in 2025, the series has received widespread praise from both critics and fans for its animation, between its cute, childlike visuals and its emotionally powerful, often tense story. The Annecy win further highlights the anime’s growing international recognition.
How Takopi’s Original Sin Balances Cute Visuals and Dark Themes
Takopi’s Original Sin tells the story of Takopi, an alien from the Happy Planet who arrives on Earth to make people happy. After meeting Shizuka Kuze, a nine-year-old girl who is constantly bullied, Takopi tries to help using magical gadgets from his home planet. What begins as a heartwarming story soon unfolds into a deeply emotional exploration of childhood trauma, bullying, regret, and the consequences of even the best intentions. Despite its bright, childlike art style, the series tackles some of the darkest themes in modern anime.
The manga had already earned widespread recognition before receiving an anime adaptation. It won the Excellence Prize at the 51st Japan Cartoonists Association Awards in 2022 and ranked No. 3 in the male readers’ category of Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2023. Produced by Enishiya in collaboration with TBS Television, the six-episode anime premiered between June and August 2025 before gaining international recognition during its festival run.
Why This Award Is a Big Achievement
Winning the Jury Award for a TV Series at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival is a major achievement. The festival is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious events in the animation industry, and its awards often highlight series that go on to earn global recognition. At the 2026 festival, Takopi’s Original Sin, directed by Shinya Iino, received the TV Series Jury Award. Other television winners included Song of the Storms, directed by Caroline Attia, which won the TV Special Jury Award, while The Broos, directed by David Mirailles, earned the Audience Award for a TV Production.
Japan also celebrated another major success at Annecy. A New Dawn, directed by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, won the Contrechamp Jury Award for Best Feature. Produced by ASMIK Ace and Miyu Productions, the film features character designs by Utsushita and music by Shūta Hasunuma. It premiered in Japanese theaters on March 6, 2026, after being delayed from its original release schedule, and had previously been showcased during Annecy’s Animation Day in 2024.
The award further strengthens the anime’s international reputation and reflects the growing global recognition of Japanese television animation.
Annecy: Where the World’s Best Animation Competes
The 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival attracted a record 19,100 accredited attendees, highlighting its growing importance as one of the world’s leading events for the animation industry. Every year, the festival brings together filmmakers, studios, distributors, and animation professionals from across the globe to celebrate the best in animated storytelling.
This year’s top honor, the Cristal for Best Feature Film, went to The Violinist, a co-production between Singapore, Spain, and Italy. Meanwhile, French animated film Iron Boy, directed by former Pixar animator Louis Clichy, won both the Jury Award and the Audience Award in the feature film category.
Japanese animation also had a strong presence throughout the festival. In addition to Takopi’s Original Sin and A New Dawn, Annecy featured the world premiere of Science SARU’s new Ghost in the Shell television series, screened the first episode of We Are Aliens, and showcased Sekiro: No Defeat, the anime adaptation of FromSoftware’s hit video game, as part of its Midnight Specials program.
What’s Next for Takopi’s Original Sin
The Annecy victory comes as Takopi’s Original Sin continues to expand. A compilation film, Takopi’s Original Sin: Thank You, See You Tomorrow, is currently in development, giving fans another reason to look forward to the franchise’s future.
The award also marks an important milestone for a series that began as a web manga on Shonen Jump+. From its humble beginnings of winning one of the animation industry’s most respected international honors, Takopi’s Original Sin has earned praise for its bold storytelling, emotional depth, and willingness to explore difficult subjects without compromising its vision.
