Hayao Miyazaki is a name synonymous with the anime industry, renowned for co-founding Studio Ghibli and crafting some of its most beloved films. His recent return from retirement with a new film has only solidified his legendary status.
At the Cannes Film Festival, Goro Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki’s son, spoke to the press before accepting an award on behalf of Studio Ghibli. He shed light on his father’s mindset, revealing that despite his age and stature, Hayao Miyazaki still views all animators as his rivals in the field.
“Even at his age, he still thinks of all the other animators around him as rivals,” Goro Miyazaki shared. “It doesn’t matter if they’re younger than him, former staff who once supported him, or animators at Ghibli or other studios. If they’re animators, they’re his rivals.”
According to Goro Miyazaki, his father is meticulous about his work and doesn’t share his ideas until they’re perfected. “Since they’re his rivals, he won’t talk to them about his ideas until he’s got the details worked out just right and he can say ‘Yes, this is it!’
Despite inspiring countless animators, Hayao Miyazaki remains focused on the competition. He maintains a winning streak and is determined to hold onto his position at the top of the industry.
The director’s dedication to his craft and competitive spirit continues to drive him, ensuring that his legacy and influence remain strong in animation.
