SEGA delivered a packed slate of announcements during Summer Game Fest 2026, but one of its most intriguing updates centered on Stranger Than Heaven. Developed by RGG Studio, the upcoming action-adventure title received a new trailer, confirmed its global release date, and revealed several high-profile additions to its cast.
The game is now officially set to launch worldwide on January 15, 2027, across Xbox platforms, PC, PlayStation 5, and cloud services, with pre-orders already available.
A Star-Studded Cast With a Surprising Addition
One of the biggest highlights from the reveal was the announcement of new cast members, including the unexpected inclusion of legendary rapper and actor Tupac Shakur. The character, named Amaru, adds a unique layer to the game’s already ambitious narrative.
Joining him are well-known Japanese actors such as Takashi Ukaji, Yasukaze Motomiya, Takaya Kuroda, and Kohei Tsuji. The reveal presentation also featured an on-stage appearance by Snoop Dogg, who discussed the creative direction behind Tupac’s character and confirmed his involvement in the game’s official theme song.
The soundtrack itself brings together a diverse lineup, with contributions from Snoop Dogg, Satoshi Fujihara, Ado, and Tori Kelly, all of whom also portray characters within the game. This blend of music and storytelling appears to be a central pillar of the experience.
A 50-Year Story Spanning Multiple Eras
Stranger Than Heaven is positioned as a large-scale narrative experience, telling a story that spans five decades. Players follow protagonist Makoto Daito, a character steering identity, survival, and belonging across different periods of modern Japan.
According to its official Steam page, the game unfolds across five cities and time periods, ranging from early 20th-century industrial towns to postwar entertainment districts and modern urban hubs. Each era introduces new environments, social dynamics, and challenges that shape Makoto’s journey.
The narrative begins in 1915, with Makoto leaving the United States after facing discrimination, setting the stage for a long and evolving story that explores both personal struggle and historical change.

Combat Meets Performance in a Unique Gameplay Mix
Beyond its story, Stranger Than Heaven stands out for combining intense combat with an unusual performance system. The game features a brutal, close-range fighting style where players control both sides of the protagonist’s body independently, creating a more dynamic and reactive combat experience.
Weapons such as knives, hammers, and katanas can be used throughout the journey, with the combat system evolving as players progress through different eras. The focus on adaptability and improvisation reflects the harsh environments Makoto must survive in.
At the same time, the game introduces a “showman” mechanic, where players build musical performances by collecting sounds from the environment. These elements can then be combined to create original tracks, organize shows, and grow Makoto’s reputation as a performer. This dual structure of violence and artistry gives the game a distinct identity compared to other action-adventure titles.
