More about the MAMA Awards
South Korea is the birthplace of the MAMA Awards, a prominent music awards ceremony organized annually by the entertainment company CJ E&M. Although K-pop performers have dominated the awards, other Asian artists have also won awards in a number of professional categories, such as Best Asian Artist.
The awards ceremony, which debuted in 1999 in Seoul and was first broadcast on Mnet, grew in scope in 2010 and began holding events in several Asian nations and cities.
The MAMA Awards have expanded from their initial regional viewership in Asia to a global online platform.
First held in 1999, the MTV Video Music Awards served as the inspiration for the event, which was originally known as the Mnet Music Video Festival. It was renamed the Mnet KM Music Video Festival in 2004 after merging with the KMTV Korean Music Awards.
By 2008, the ceremony had achieved international recognition, particularly in China and Japan, as the Hallyu wave picked up steam in the mid-2000s.
The event changed its name to the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in 2009 to highlight its growing international appeal. The first event was held in Macau in 2010, marking the beginning of the geographical expansion. Later iterations were held in Hong Kong from 2012 to 2017 and Singapore in 2011.
In 2017, the event ran for four nights, with stops in Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Japan. 2018 saw the three-part format of MAMA, which was held in Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea. In 2020, MAMA changed to an online format that was solely hosted in South Korea due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
