When Squid Game Season 1 first aired, its massive success set the stage for an equally impressive follow-up. Fans expected the second season to draw in big numbers, but Season 2 has managed to surpass those expectations.
Last week, the South Korean series became Netflix’s most-watched season of all time, overtaking the previous record-holder, Wednesday.
This week, the streak continues, with Squid Game Season 2 once again leading as the most-watched non-English title on the platform. Surprisingly, the second most-watched title this week is none other than Squid Game Season 1.
In the past seven days, Season 2 recorded a staggering 58.2 million views, which is nearly the same as its premiere numbers. This indicates that interest in Gi-hun’s story, played by Lee Jung-jae, has remained strong.
In fact, the show seems to have grown even more popular, with Season 1 drawing an additional 13.6 million views this week. The renewed interest in the first season suggests that fans are either catching up before starting Season 2 or rewatching the series as excitement mounts for the third and final season.
Netflix subscribers have been revisiting the dark and intense world of Squid Game, and it seems the show’s appeal hasn’t waned since its initial release.
Season 1, which had already been climbing back up the charts ahead of the new season’s debut, has now secured its spot at #2. This performance demonstrates that the gripping survival drama has a lasting hold on audiences across the globe.
Other Netflix Hits Make Their Mark
Although Squid Game is dominating the charts, other shows have managed to capture viewers’ attention and achieve respectable viewership. One standout is the thriller miniseries Missing You, based on Harlan Coben’s popular novels.
Since its premiere on January 1, the series has amassed 21.7 million views. Its success proves that Netflix’s decision to adapt Coben’s work was a smart move, and more projects based on his stories are already in development.
Another notable series is the disaster drama La Palma, which has remained in Netflix’s top 10 since its release on December 12. This week, the show added 8.3 million views to its total, continuing its consistent performance.
Taron Egerton’s Thriller Carry-On Remains a Hit
In the movie category, Taron Egerton’s action-thriller Carry-On continues to be a fan favorite. Though its momentum slowed slightly, the film still brought in 17.4 million views this week, securing its spot among Netflix’s most-watched movies.
Tyler Perry’s The Six Triple Eight, a WWII drama about the only all-Black female battalion during the war, also remains a popular choice. This week, it garnered 10.8 million views, standing out as the sole title featuring a Black-led cast in the top ranks.
International Movies on the Rise
In non-English movies, there were some surprises. Last year’s French hit Under Paris returned to Netflix’s top 10 after weeks of being off the charts, accumulating 1 million views. Meanwhile, Norwegian movie Number 24 debuted at #1 with 8 million views, while Italian romantic comedy The Love Scam entered at #3 with 4.2 million views.
With a mix of returning hits and fresh releases, Netflix continues to keep audiences engaged with diverse stories. However, Squid Game clearly remains in a league of its own, setting records and holding viewers’ attention with its thrilling narrative and unforgettable characters.
