Sony has shared new insight into its approach for the PlayStation 6, confirming that it has not yet finalized either the console’s launch window or its pricing strategy. The company says it is closely monitoring market conditions, particularly rising component costs, before making key decisions about its next-generation hardware.

The comments came during a recent Game & Network Services business Q&A, where Sony executives were asked whether future PlayStation hardware would continue prioritizing profitability over selling consoles at a loss. The discussion follows growing industry concerns about increasing RAM and storage prices, which have already affected gaming hardware across multiple manufacturers.

Sony wants PlayStation hardware to remain profitable

Responding to investor questions, Sony emphasized that PlayStation hardware remains the foundation of its gaming ecosystem. The company also highlighted products such as the PlayStation Portal, saying it aims to expand how players access PlayStation games beyond the traditional living room setup.

Regarding pricing, Sony acknowledged that rising manufacturing costs cannot be absorbed indefinitely.

“As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses,”

the company said in its official transcript. Sony added that it has already raised hardware prices in several markets outside Japan and noted that customer demand has remained stable despite those increases.

The company also stressed,

“We believe it is important for us to make every effort to ensure that customers fully understand the value we provide in relation to pricing.”

PS6 launch window remains undecided

Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki previously confirmed that the company has not yet settled on a release date or price for the PlayStation 6.

“We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices,”

Totoki said during a previous business briefing, according to Sony’s official transcript.

“We would like to really observe and follow the situation.”

Totoki also pointed to ongoing memory shortages, saying high RAM prices are expected to continue into fiscal year 2027, making hardware planning more challenging. Despite these concerns, he noted that PlayStation’s active user base continues to grow, suggesting Sony is under no immediate pressure to rush its next-generation console.

Rising hardware costs impact the entire gaming industry

Sony’s cautious approach reflects broader trends across the gaming industry. Memory and storage shortages have increased production costs for consoles and consumer electronics, prompting several manufacturers to raise prices in recent months.

Microsoft recently announced another Xbox price increase, while Valve also adjusted expectations surrounding its newly released Steam Machine following discussions about its performance and hardware costs.

Industry analysts have begun speculating about what these rising expenses could mean for future consoles. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Aldora CEO Joost van Dreunen warned that next-generation systems could launch as late as 2028 and potentially cost more than $1,000.

Meanwhile, Newzoo market intelligence director Manu Rosier suggested that although premium models may exceed four figures, manufacturers will likely try to keep entry-level versions below the psychologically significant $1,000 price point.

For now, Sony has made one thing clear: the PlayStation 6’s pricing and release schedule remain under evaluation, with market conditions continuing to play a major role in shaping the company’s next move.
