Shueisha is using MANGA MILLION to introduce international readers to hundreds of manga, including nearly 300 titles receiving official translations for the first time. Among the lesser-known works featured in the project are three manga personally recommended by Shuhei Hosono, Editor-in-Chief of MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA. His selections are particularly interesting for fans of Black Clover, Haikyu!! and My Hero Academia, because each recommendation comes from the creators behind those major franchises.
In an exclusive written interview with OtakuKart, Hosono was asked which first-time translated manga he would suggest to readers outside Japan. Rather than focusing only on established international hits, he pointed toward earlier serialized works that fans may have overlooked.
Hosono recommended Hungry Joker, Yotsuya Senpai no Kaidan, and Witching Hour Zoo. The three titles offer an opportunity to explore the earlier work of creators who would later become associated with some of Shueisha’s biggest modern manga.
Three Manga Hosono Wants Fans to Discover
Hosono specifically recommended the titles to readers who already enjoy Black Clover, Haikyu!! and My Hero Academia. In his interview with OtakuKart, he said,
“For fans of titles such as Black Clover, Haikyu!!, and My Hero Academia, we recommend checking out the creators’ early serialized works: Hungry Joker, Yotsuya Senpai no Kaidan, and Witching Hour Zoo.”
Hungry Joker was created by Yuki Tabata before he launched Black Clover. Yotsuya Senpai no Kaidan comes from Haikyu!! creator Haruichi Furudate, while Witching Hour Zoo was created by Kohei Horikoshi before My Hero Academia.
The recommendations fit MANGA MILLION’s broader purpose of helping readers discover manga beyond Shueisha’s most recognizable franchises. The project currently offers approximately 400 titles in more than 100 languages, allowing these earlier works to reach audiences who may never previously have had access to official translations.
For Hosono, discovering unexpected series and new international readerships is one of the most exciting possibilities of the initiative.
