Seiken Densetsu: Legend of Mana – The Teardrop Crystal Episode 5 is set to release this weekend. As part of the Legend of Mana franchise, Yokohama Animation Laboratory and Graphinica developed an anime series based on Square Enix’s video game Legend of Mana. Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal premiered in October 2022.
This series is about Shiloh, a young man living near Domina, who receives an important mission from a mysterious voice while he is sleeping. The mission is to help Elazul and Pearl, and two Jumi survivors thought to be capable of healing others thanks to their tears. Furthermore, the Jumis differ from other tribes in that they have a precious stone in place of the heart, which has caused jewel seekers to hunt them. Will Shiloh achieve his destiny?
Seiken Densetsu: Legend of Mana The Teardrop Crystal Episode 4 Review
The anime uses the game’s female avatar (Serafina) as co-MC, something Granblue Fantasy wasn’t able to accomplish. For Granblue, you can also play using a male avatar (Gran)or a female avatar (Djeeta). Cygames (the game developer) rejected the idea and insisted they only wanted Gran as the main character.
The anime director wanted both characters to serve as co-leads, but the heads at Cygames rejected the idea. Sandra’s strength and combat prowess are also shown in this episode, demonstrating Shiloh’s outclassing against her and explaining his bad showing from the last episode of getting one kick to the gut from her that knocked him out.
In spite of the fact that the animation of her breaking Shiloh’s sword was a bit lacking, she was able to throw Shiloh across the room (destroying the furniture he hit), kick Shiloh into a rock formation, punt Basket Fish meters away into a bunch of tables (and send them flying), and throw Shiloh across the room. There were only a few episodes of Djeeta as part of alternate universe side stories.

About The Anime Seiken Densetsu: Legend of Mana – The Teardrop Crystal
Clearly, this anime is an attempt by SquareEnix to capitalize on the old Mana games since Dawn of Mana tanked the franchise in 2006, which pushed new games such as Rise of Mana to mobile and iOS. SquareEnix seems to be saying, “Remember when Mana games were good?” when they bring the 30-year-old franchise to its glory days. As a result, I had low expectations for Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal.
This is a show designed to stir the flames of millennial fans like me who are still hoping for an official translation of Mother 3 or a fresh season of Gargoyles. This show does both, but it does it better. Teardrop Crystal pays a lot of passion and attention to bringing the late-1990s JRPG to life.
Some of it might be unavoidable. The original material for Legend of Mana has such rich world-building and visuals that a Legend of Mana anime must include some of its most endearing qualities, such as a cast of weird-spooky-cute characters like Rev. Nouvelle.
Isono Hiroo’s paintings define the Mana series. However, he did not contribute to the key art for Legend of Mana. That’s how the show isn’t a clone. Despite the fact that he did not contribute to Legend of Mana’s main graphics, Teardrop pays tribute to him through its aesthetic style, which incorporates his particular way of painting flora.
It’s the decision to sparingly utilize renowned video game composer Shimomura Yoko’s music instead of blaring the Home and Domina theme from the get-go, as well as the adaptation of the Swedish theme song to Japanese for the ED. It’s evident that they put effort into this show in bits and pieces, and I’m glad for it because it’s not overwhelming.
