The Batman: Part II has been surrounded by secrecy since Matt Reeves began developing the sequel, but Sebastian Stan has now offered one of the clearest indications yet of how ambitious the production feels from inside the project. The actor recently compared the experience of working on the DC sequel to making The Godfather Part II, one of cinema’s most acclaimed follow-ups.
Stan made the comparison while discussing the movie with Variety. Although his comments reveal his enthusiasm for Reeves’ production, they do not confirm the identity of his character, an important distinction given the speculation surrounding his casting.
Sebastian Stan Sees Something Special in Reeves’ Sequel
While discussing his experience on The Batman: Part II, Stan described what happens when he visits the set and sees the scale of Reeves’ production.
“I go to set sometimes, and I look around, and I’m like, I think we’re making f***ing Godfather Part Two.”
Stan immediately acknowledged the magnitude of the comparison rather than presenting it as a guarantee that the movie will reach the same artistic level. His comments instead suggest that he has been impressed by the filmmaking process and the amount of work Reeves has invested in the sequel.
Why The Godfather Part II Is Such a Huge Comparison
Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part II is an unusually demanding film to invoke when discussing a sequel. Released in 1974, it expanded the Corleone family saga by following Michael Corleone while simultaneously following the earlier life of his father, Vito. Its parallel storytelling, character development, and exploration of power helped establish it as a benchmark for sequel filmmaking.
Stan’s comparison therefore says more about the perceived ambition of The Batman: Part II than its genre. Reeves appears to be approaching the sequel as an extension of the crime-driven world established in The Batman, rather than simply creating a larger collection of action sequences.
That distinction could be particularly important for Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne. The first movie presented Batman as a young vigilante still learning what his symbol means to Gotham. A sequel can push that character further by examining the consequences of his actions and the changing criminal environment around him.
The Sequel Remains Shrouded in Secrecy
Despite Stan’s enthusiasm, major story details remain under wraps. His own casting has generated considerable speculation, with reports variously connecting him to characters including Victor Zsasz and Harvey Dent.
However, Stan has not officially confirmed that he is playing Harvey Dent. A previously published quote from Le Journal du Dimanche identifying him as Dent was subsequently removed, and reports indicated that the actor had been misquoted. The corrected interview leaves his character undisclosed.
That makes Stan’s recent comments particularly interesting because they provide production insight without revealing the story.
