Robert Pattinson has offered one of the clearest teases yet about what audiences can expect from The Batman: Part II, and it sounds like Matt Reeves is not simply repeating the formula of the first movie. While promoting Primetime at the Venice Film Festival, Pattinson praised Reeves’ latest screenplay and described the sequel as a “really radical retelling of Batman.”
The comments are particularly notable because plot details for the sequel remain tightly guarded. Pattinson suggested that the changes are substantial enough to make the new movie look noticeably different from its predecessor, giving fans another reason to be curious about the long-awaited return to Gotham.
Pattinson Teases a Very Different Batman Sequel
Speaking to MYmovies, with the comments reported by IGN IGN, Pattinson said Reeves had delivered an impressive script.
“Matt just wrote this amazing script,”
Pattinson said.
“I think the first one was… it’s difficult to reinvent Batman as this new thing. And then to go in another totally different direction.”
The actor went on to emphasize just how much the sequel is changing, saying,
“It’s a really radical retelling of Batman. I think people are going to be excited by it.”
Pattinson also noted that footage he has seen from the production already looks different from the 2022 film.
That distinction could be important for a sequel following one of the most distinctive recent interpretations of the character. The Batman presented Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne as a young, emotionally damaged vigilante investigating corruption and a series of murders across a rain-soaked Gotham City.
Rather than simply introducing another villain and repeating that detective formula, Reeves appears to be taking the story in a substantially different direction. However, neither Pattinson nor Reeves has revealed enough details to establish exactly what the “radical” change involves.
The Batman: Part II Has Finally Entered Production
The sequel has also taken considerably longer to reach theaters than initially expected. The Batman: Part II was announced in 2022, but multiple delays pushed its release date back considerably. Warner Bros. currently has the movie scheduled for February 18, 2028, nearly six years after the original film.
Reeves is directing and co-writing the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin, while Pattinson returns as Batman. Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell are also returning as James Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth and the Penguin, respectively. The sequel additionally features new cast members including Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson.
Reeves has already provided a glimpse of Pattinson’s new Batman through camera-test footage, but the story itself remains largely secret. Pattinson’s latest comments therefore provide an intriguing indication that the lengthy wait is leading toward something substantially different rather than a straightforward continuation of the first movie.
