The early access survival game Sand: Raiders of Sophie has reached a significant commercial milestone, with publisher TinyBuild confirming over 300,000 copies sold just weeks after launch. The steampunk-mech desert survival title has quickly built momentum on Steam, despite a turbulent start marked by server instability and rapid post-launch fixes.

TinyBuild CEO Alex Nichiporchik celebrated the achievement on X, writing:

“300K copies for Sand sold, we getting half hour of air conditioning tonight!”

The lighthearted comment reflects the unexpectedly strong performance of the game, which continues to attract a growing player base despite technical hurdles.

Server issues and rollback updates addressed quickly

While the sales milestone is a major win for the studio, the launch period has not been without complications. A recent update deployed on July 2 introduced connection issues that left some players stuck on the “Connecting” screen, forcing developers to temporarily roll back the patch.

The team quickly identified the problem and redeployed a corrected version shortly after, minimizing downtime. Despite the setback, the update cycle has helped stabilize the experience and improve performance across key systems.

Following the restored update, Sand reached its highest concurrent Steam player count of over 40,000 users, placing it within Steam’s top 100 most-played games. The title has been seen alongside major releases such as Helldivers 2 and Farming Simulator 25, highlighting its strong early traction in a competitive market.

Unlike many high-traffic multiplayer titles, Sand is a premium $20 early access release, meaning its player engagement translates directly into strong revenue performance rather than relying on a free-to-play model.

Update improvements focus on stability and gameplay refinement

The development team has continued to push frequent updates focused on stability and gameplay refinement. Recent changes include:

  • Fixes for server connection failures and matchmaking issues
  • Improved anti-cheat behavior and reduced false bans
  • Performance enhancements through occlusion and movement optimization
  • Adjustments to character controls and collision systems
  • Multiple fixes for vehicle and “trampler” physics behavior
  • Balance updates to weapons, loot systems, and economy values

Developers also addressed a range of bugs affecting combat interactions, movement consistency, and environmental collisions, while continuing to refine multiplayer expedition systems.
