Showrunner Andrew Dettmann of S.W.A.T. had assured Kenny Johnson and Alex Russell of a “proper curtain call,” but neither actor returned as a series regular for the show’s final season on CBS. And I think we can all agree that the second of this Friday night’s two episodes gave Street, for starters, a wonderfully suitable sendoff.
“Since Season 7 will have 13 episodes in total, we wanted to give everyone a proper send-off,” Dettmann said in an interview with TVLine before to the season. “As a result, the episodes we have for Russell and Johnson are really focused on their characters and the evolution of their storylines.”
Recap
In the fifth and last episode of S.W.A.T., “The End of the Road,” Street was temporarily assisting his former boss Bruce Jones’ team, 30-Squad, in Long Beach. It was there that they discovered evidence of a dormant motorcycle gang leader who was preparing a (violent) comeback.
Even worse, an undercover LAPD officer had used armor-piercing rounds that the biker had used to bolster his group. In order to collaborate with Hondo & Co. to uncover the biker’s elaborate scheme and foil it before armor-piercing weaponry could be deployed, Street and Jones journeyed to Los Angeles proper.
The 20-Squad was able to determine the location of the bullet storage thanks to a tracking tag that the hacked LAPD officer had affixed to the ammunition. However, a brief gunfight broke out when the two teams got there, and Jones was taken out.
Following the shooting of their squad commander, Street prevented an enraged 30-Squad, which included, among others, a resurrected version of himself by the name of Carnegie, from going crazy.
All in all, Street defeated the Big Bad by himself while working with 20-Squad and 30-Squad to stop the resurgent motorcycle gang in its tracks. When Street returned to S.W.A.T., Hicks informed him that Jones had not survived the procedure.
Then he decided to tell 30-Squad and Carnegie himself. In the penultimate scene of the show, Street waited for Hondo outside the boxing arena to tell his mentor that he felt compelled to take charge of 30-Squad and apply what he had learned over the years.
Tan caught up to Street in the parking lot, just as he was hoping for an Irish farewell, begging Hondo to inform the others he had departed. The two talked about how, despite their initial rivalry for Hondo’s attention, they ended up becoming the best of friends.
Street told Tan that they would still run into each other in Los Angeles, especially at his and Chris’s impending “engagement party,” as he rode off on his bike. Street questioned, “Just don’t tell anybody— especially Chris!” as Tan did a double take. That is to say, he intends to pop the question soon.
