Ryan Eggold, who previously starred in the medical drama New Amsterdam, is moving to a new NBC show. TVLine has confirmed that Eggold will guest-star in an episode of Law & Order for its upcoming Season 24.
Eggold will play Matt Riley, the brother of Senior Detective Vince Riley. Detective Riley is portrayed by Reid Scott from Veep. Riley was introduced in Season 23 to replace Detective Frank Cosgrove, who was played by Jeffrey Donovan.
Matt Riley will make his debut in the third episode of the season, titled “Big Brother.” It is unclear what role Matt Riley will have or if he will be the ‘big brother’ mentioned in the episode’s title. The introduction of this character may suggest that the show will explore more about Vince Riley’s background.
In Season 23, Vince Riley mentioned his brother and other family members, but this is the first time one of them will appear on screen. Vince has a complicated past, including a suspension from his previous job for punching a problematic NYPD captain.
He attributed his reaction to the stress from his father’s recent death but did not provide further details. With Matt Riley’s appearance in Season 24, it’s possible that the story will touch on the Riley family’s past, including the senior Riley.
Who Else Will Be Guest on ‘Law & Order’ Season 24?
Law & Order fans will also see some familiar faces in Season 24. Mariska Hargitay, known for her role as Olivia Benson in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, will guest-star for the first time in the revival.
Elizabeth Marvel, who played Defense Attorney Rita Calhoun in SVU, will also guest-star in the same October episode as Hargitay. These appearances will happen before Eggold’s character debuts in Episode 3.
Other changes are happening on the Law & Order set as well. Maura Tierney, known for her role in ER, will join the cast as a new lieutenant. Despite a shortened Season 23 due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America Strike, Season 24 will return to its regular 22-episode format. Fans are excited to see what new characters and storylines Season 24 will bring.
